lantern53 Posted June 26, 2020 Posted June 26, 2020 I've always suspected you used it for divebombing and it's offset due to engine torque...right or wrong?...and does anyone use it that way?

It's just a backup for the reflector site. If you move your head laterally you can line the ring up with a bead mounted on the nose. It was not uncommon for gunsight bulb to burn out or not function so it was considered prudent to have a backup physical gunsight. If you line your head up right you'll notice your bullets converge at the bead.
migmadmarine Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 You'll see a lot of other aircraft have similar, be it a large physical ring and bead sight like on the P-40 or P-39, or the very small ones mounted on the German sights.
ShamrockOneFive Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 Even the F/A-18C has a physical ring and bead sight located on the edge of the HUD. In the event of a HUD failure. So that takes us right into 2005 at least (I'm assume after that too) where that is still a thing that is done just in-case the technology fails.
Jaegermeister Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 Or you could stick your chewing gum on the windshield like Robin Olds when the bulb burns out.
