Folks,

i currently have 16gb of 2400mhz RAM. If I was to upgrade would it be better to go for 32gb of 2400 (so another 2 8gb packs) or ditch the 2400 completely and go for 16gb of eg 3400mhz RAM. Motherboard (MSI Z370-A PRO) can cope with either.

If you are ever reaching a point where your RAM is close to or at full usage, I would say that going with the 32 GB would probably net you more gains than faster RAM. Otherwise, the faster RAM might make more of a difference.

If you go for faster RAM though be sure to read the reviews carefully, when I was shopping for new RAM I saw a lot of sticks advertised as 3400 (and priced at a premium) and people were finding they were only stable at 2866 or 3000 no matter what they did.

For this game the faster ram is better, since, right now, it doesn't need more than 16GB. If you play DCS, or plan to play it I'd go for 32GB.

Why are you upgrading and what do you hope to achieve?

If you are running out of memory for certain software, more RAM is obviously better. Otherwise, the faster RAM could give better performance.

However, none of this matters if something else is limiting your performance, such as the GPU (typical with gaming).

Keep in mind that performance improvements from memory speed will always be relatively small.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. Main reason for upgrade is DCS use, there seems to be a theme that it uses more than 16gb at times and i do get some stutters, I could always dial the settings back a bit but I like the picture I get 90% of the time. BoS is fine, I have no issues at all running my Rift S here. Graphics card is 2070 so no issues there either.

Cheers

I have 32GB and in DCS, I've seen 27GB used while playing offline.

Relax.  ?  It was after a fresh patch, on the Normandy map, with around 40 AI B-17s.  ?

I like the G.Skill stuff.  It is reasonably priced for what it is and is the Samsung B die.  Your system may or may not be able to clock high speeds depending on the silicon lottery.  I tried to get 4000mhz stuff to run but it was not stable above 2933.  I was able to get a G.Skill 3200 CL14 kit to run well which I currently use.  I'd recommend the G.Skill 3600 CL16 kit or the 3200 CL14.
