Looking at various missions i saw 2 basic solutions of setting up a Leader-wingmen combined flight on a waypointed route. In both cases takeoff is on the runway.

There's no formation command for now.

1) you set up a flight of say 5 planes, and target link each wingman (1-4) to the leader. The route waypoints are object linked back to the leader ONLY.

2) the same, and then ALSO object link each waypoint on the route back to EACH plane (Leader, AND Wingman 1-4).

With setup 1) it seems the wing men sooner or later gets lost, easier, and often crashes, especially when the leader is also the player,

and when you put the pedal to the metal instead of keeping just about the waypointed speed settings. Setting op a formation command after startup might fix this?

With 2) the wingmen seem to behave better in such a case, and stick to the leader. When you slow down the leader is even sometimes overtaken shortly by a wingman it seems.

Now i wonder which way works best, and under what circumstances ....

I tried setup 1) with 2 planes, A Ju52 and an added He111 as slaved wingman; latter always crashes some where into a mountain hillside in Kuban.

Also when the He11 gets a Cover command at the 2nd waypoint. The Ju52 follows the route OK, but the He11 gets lost.

Object link waypoints to the Leader and use a formation command.

Thnx, i almost read that as that the formation command should be repeated at each waypoint LoL.

My question was 'triggered' because of a downloaded DFLion mission, Train Busting, where every waypoint is object linked (see 2) above) to the Player flight leader AND each wingman.

See pis below.

It runs quite well and the wingmen don't seem to get lost and crash en route as much. I guess i'll have to get into the formation business a bit more.

For now I want to use a formation command, AND a cover command for an Ai flight; can i set those (timer separated) at the same waypoint?

Or must i use a complex trigger setup instead?

As for escorting, here's the logic I use.  The cover planes fly lazy eights over the bombers but when enemy approach they go after them.  When the dispatch them they find their way back to the bomber group.  Cover planes are enabled via Event Messages from a Complex Trigger triggered by the entry of enemy planes.
