Hello guys, I need a little help here.

I purchased and installed IL-2 GB a few months ago during one of their sales, just after the upgraded damage effects had been incorporated into the game. I have a rather poor internet connection and planned on flying offline for now. I performed the download/install at a friends house with excellent internet using an  Ethernet cable to ensure as clean/corrupt free install as possible. I have just now had the chance to fire up the game for the first time at my home location [tested it briefly at the install location] and have run into a few issues:

On my desktop when I click on the launcher, if I'm offline, it states "Failed to update" and that's the end of that. I then went into the bin file and created a shortcut of the IL-2 application on my desktop; using this did open the game to the hanger opening screen with Steam VR and Oculus opening automatically , but when I chose the 'Offline' option, it states 'Please update your game, new version available'

When I click on the Launcher, it begins an update, the file size is 21.28GB ! Is this a typical update, seems like a massive file involved. I hoped to limit the number of times I would need to update due to my slow connection, but as in this case, will I not be able to proceed unless I perform all updates along the way? I guess I will have to leave more time for downloading if so, but is there a way to just play offline without updating too frequently?

Would it be possible to copy my game folder onto a flash drive as a back up, and then I could go to a decent internet location and have the updates performed on the drive? Is that possible? I'm thinking it would probably need to be loaded onto my laptop, then use that as a backup/update shuttle.

If anyone else plays offline most times and can give recommendations re this and other things I might want to consider, it would greatly appreciated.

Hey Puyo3,

When you login you should be able to choose offline mode when you reach the login screen which will let you play, albeit with fewer features. If you are playing that way the Quick Mission Builder and the Scripted Campaigns I think work just fine but the mission generation for the Career mode on servers and is sent downstream so it will be unavailable.

IL-2 doesn't update as frequently as some sims do but they do come up with regular updates and really this is no different across the industry. Solving the frequent update issue is a more challenging one. Maybe someone has an ingenious idea that will help you out. I wish I did! Update size depends on how far back you are currently and there have been a few patches recently that have made some larger changes that have no doubt contributed to the file size. IMHO, 21 GB updates is hardly an extreme thing anymore especially if you're a few versions behind. Call of Duty players were balking at a 75 GB update just a few weeks ago. It's fine if you have solid internet but it's problematic when you don't have access to high speed.

thanks for that reply; I only got as far as the hanger login screen, and when selecting Offline, was prevented from opening the game, message  'A new version of the game is available, Please Update' So one cannot proceed and play, you must apparently update. I have had an almost 2 month delay, so however I manage the update I expect that if I update regularly as I go without such a long period, that will keep the single download size from getting this large [hopefully]

One other thing I failed to mention in my original post; it states 'Downloading game client" - why is it referred to this way rather than 'Downloading updates'?

After a update click on the green Enter key.

Game Client / Downloading Updates... it doesn't matter.

Right. You do probably need to be on the latest version of the client regardless. The update cadence is about every 6-8 weeks or so followed typically by 1-2 smaller hotfixes to solve minor problems after release.

As for 'Downloading game client' and why its written that way... I imagine it's been named by a programmer :)

Thanks to all respondents; I did the update, took some time due to my challenged connection, and all is well, started right up. With Il-2 1946 you could update when you were ready, or using HSFX 7.03, never as it was based on 4.12, so I wasn't thinking of mandatory updates, but it makes sense with the new levels of complexity and features of the game.

Hope this helps some other late comers to the game understand re updates, and the need to keep current.
