Deferred Shading Pros and Cons: Advice from the Devs please.

Please can we have some guidance from the Devs that may help people get the best visual results from the new Deferred Shading process.

A quick internet search for "Deferred Shading advantages and disadvantages" suggests the following which may or may not be totally correct:

PROS:

1. Improved lighting and reflections. ( TBH I don't see a massive change from before )

2. Improved performance. ( VR users seem to have noticed this. For me it's the same on a 1080p TV )

CONS:

1. Doesn't play well with MSAA anti aliaising and requires post process anti aliasing, i.e. FXAA or similar. ( Explains why in game MSAA isn't working)

2. Doesn't handle transparency well. ( Maybe it's the reason for contacts ballooning in clouds. FXAA seems to improve this for me)

3. Can require heavy video memory usage. ( Could be a factor for people using older cards with limited VRAM like my GTX 970 )

I don't claim to be an expert, I just see that certain aspects of the sim have got worse for me since the move to deferred shading and I'm trying to find out why and hopefully get some advice from the Devs on the best settings to use with Deferred Shading.

My priority in a combat sim is spotting and visibility. If Deferred Shading forces us to use FXAA for anti aliaising then we need finer control of how much is used because FXAA introduces blur which kills distant contact spotting. It should be on a scale starting from barely noticeable, just enough to remove a few edges without introducing blur.

My intention for this post is not to criticise but to move towards a better understanding of what we have in the sim now and how to get the best out of it on all the various set ups that people have.

A good start would be some advice from the Devs

Thanks

My problem is, with the new DS, I lost about 75% FPS! I have a GTX 1660TI 6GB Vmem vidcard and had consistet 60FPS before the DS upgrade, now I have 15FPS and some rare times I get 18 FPS! My system specs are

MB  ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-F Gaming

CPU Intel Core i5-9600 3.70GHz OC to 4311GHz

RAM 16 GB DDR4 Kingston @ 2401MHz max

I wonder what happened to my setup with this DS upgrade!

Seems like DS is a bit heavy on some Hardware and the GTX 1660Ti isn´t the best Graphics Card for any kind of Flight Siming to be honest. But 75% performance loss is scary.

Sidenote: I didn´t notice any loss of FPS on my side and I play with 90% Ultra Settings all the time.

I wish they would fix this wired stuff in one of the next patches:

So you're telling us, with your system, you only get between 15 and 18 FPS? There must be something really wrong with your system or installation. May I ask

the following:

1. Screenshot of your game's graphic settings

2. Screenshots of your Nvidia control panel settings

3. Are you using mods when registering these abysmal FPS?

4. Do you play careers in IL2 GB?

Cheers

75% loss?!?!? ? - that definitely shouldn't be happening. I am running a 1660 Super (overclocked to pretend to be a Ti ?) and I am experiencing a perhaps 5-7% increase in FPS since the switch to DS (though that is only a perceived estimate as without Remagen benchmark able to run on lastest version, can't be entirely sure) - this with MSAA and all the niceties.

....

Regarding the aircraft outlined in sky background colors against clouds (cloud-blind in a sense) - was told it is a byproduct of the switch to DP. I am not a fan of that either and wish it could be improved upon ?

I have a non oc 1660 super and an i5 7500 and slower memory and I am pulling 60 FPS at nearly all times on Ultra. Something weird is going on there...

1660 Super here as well on an old 2600k @ 4.8 Ghz

Offline I rarely go below 90s and I run ultra almost everything up.

I just replaced old card RX 570 that was averaging high 60s.

It sounds like you may have other issues at play.

They should be in your "screenshot" folder of your game.

Found the games graphic pics but where are the nvidia ones?

Following Storebrors recommendations I have the nVidia settings all as default (as I cannot find those screenshots.

My problem is SOLVED! Don´t know how, don´t know when or where but it´s solved! Last night I started the game an lo and behold, three different maps (Kuban, Stalingrad and Bodenplatte) in quick mission, thre different AC lots of ground targets BUT a steady 60 FPS! Now I´ll test with Ultra settings and ramping up filters to check if it´s consistent. I´ll reposrt back later.

I am late to the party, but for others with problems, I had to restore settings in nvidia control panel, and also to restart game 2-3 times without game config as read only. That made my setup to be fast again.
