Tycoon Posted June 5, 2020 Posted June 5, 2020 I've been trying to get into GBs but the spotting is horrible, anyone who flies both can you say what the differences are? thx
I/JG54_chuishan Posted June 5, 2020 Posted June 5, 2020 (edited) Well... From the point of spotting experience, I would say that clod is relatively more comfortable than GB series. I'm a laptop player and I can't spot aircraft out of 4 km without zooming in GB. In clod you can get more metal reflections on sunny day and a much better long range visual. I can spot aircraft out to approx. 8 km without zooming. Edited June 5, 2020 by I/JG54_chuishan
vipe155 Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 I'd personally put it this way... I played CLOD for years before getting BOS. I didn't know spotting issues were a thing until that time. In Cliffs of Dover, I've haven't had an aircraft seemingly "disappear" on me, can see far out high and low, and never have to zoom way in to get an idea of what I'm looking at. I don't consider there to be any issue with this and don't see it discussed, unlike Great Battles sims. 1
LLv34_Flanker Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 S! Never had issues with spotting in Cliffs. It simply works without being an all seeing eye or arcadey. In my opinion a near perfect implementation of playability vs realism. 2
56RAF_Stickz Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 I agree with the above posts, better, easier in Clod, although do find looking down directly at times can be difficult but can usually pick it back up. And flying clod showed that I have may got lazy on BoX, almost not expecting to see anything so do not search well or frequently enough.
PreyStalker Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 Having flown both extensively, the main difference is that in CLOD your eye is trained to spot small dark dots on the horizon or against the ground. With good display settings I was seeing contacts clearly at 12k distance and very faintly at 13-15k. (1080p 40' TV) In BOX, you have to learn to look for specks of varying colour on the horizon or against the ground. Sometimes a bright speck, sometimes a dark one. Sunlight, clouds, summer and winter maps all affect the distant contacts. Once you spot a distant contact, the next task is to track it because it's so easy to lose it if you take your eyes off. The dot doesn't remain a constant colour like in CLOD so you have to watch it like a hawk ! Unfortunately, the latest 4.006 update has made distant spotting very difficult again for many people, which is a shame because 4.005 wasn't bad once you knew what to look for.
Raven109 Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 Adding to what some have said above, one more difference between CoD and GB is that in CoD there is a lot of fighting going on above water. This means that you are spotting against a rather uniform backdrop which makes it easier. However, when flying overland I still find myself in difficulty sometimes, and tuning your display/graphics settings does help that.
