Question on number of AI wingmen

I know with PWCG when choosing a SP mission, sometimes it is 4 total , sometimes 2 total, and occasionally 3 total.

Is there anything goes into the equation that determines this, or is it a randomized number only?
Like when I have only total of 2, I will typically add one or two more to have for the mission just in case needed. 

Wondering if only two assigned for a mission if it is expected to have light enemy air ai activity for the mission?

Don't recall the details but yes, formation size depends on who is flying when.  Germans, Americans, and British always fly fighter missions in groups of 2 - preferably 4.  Russians will start the war flying in groups of 3.  I think bomber formations are less strict about even numbers since the idea is a defensive formation.

 

So yes, there is something there.  Exactly what could be improved is TBD.
