No Aircraft Further than 4 km - Graphics Settings Wrong?

I recently started playing BoS, and noticed that I can't ever see aircraft further than about 4 km out.  I've used icons, and watching the icon carefully, even with the sky or clouds as a backdrop, I don't see even a tiny dot until they're within 4 km.  From reading online I get the impression that I should at least be able to see a small dot further out than that.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

 

I know for a fact that my spotting skills are no good yet, but the icon experiment seems to suggest that my settings may not be ideal.  Here are my hardware and settings, can anyone see anything that should be changed?  I'm always getting 140-144 fps, so performance doesn't seem to be an issue.

 

Hardware:

CPU:  i7-9700K

GPU:  GeForce RTX 2060 Super

RAM:  16 GB

Monitor:  LG 32GK650G-B 32" 144hz

You have a good system, I recommend setting the "Off" parameter in TargetFPS and practice with the markers on for a while.
