Jzanke_noodle Posted June 2, 2020 Posted June 2, 2020 (edited) Hi all, I can't help but notice the engine/flyby sounds are nothing like they would be in real life. DCS does a much better job of recreating this, damn near spot on. I would also like to say I really love this game and the detail put in thus far so why is this completely absent? MarderIV Posted June 2, 2020 Posted June 2, 2020 I don't think it's the engine sound that's having issues beyond how far and how loud they propagate. Rather I think it's the prop sound that's lacking a bit. On some planes like the A-20, you can hear the blade slap and make out other noises quite easily, even from a bit farther away. Although the distance can be a bit limited versus real life, depending on what speakers or headphones you have, it might not be the case for other older planes. The sounds a propeller generates are multi-faceted (pg. 3 onwards) They're a lot more dynamic than how the engine sounds like and I think this is the source of the discrepancies between how a plane sounds like in-game versus how it is in real life. We might not be able to recreate the full range of those sounds in-game, but maybe the propagation of the propeller sounds can be looked at as an alternative since they seem rather short-ranged. That's my main concern here. I suspect if we can hear those sounds over more realistic distances, we might be able to pick up more of the noises the plane generates instead of all the sounds getting smushed into a certain band much much closer to the plane. Attenuation is key here. 1

The owners of ED, The Fighter Company, own a lot of aircraft so it makes it easier for them to send out a team and get a real life recording done. The 1CGS team doesn't have a wealthy benefactor that owns dozens of warbirds and other aircraft needed to get these sounds so they have to do what they can. IMHO they have good sounds and the in cockpit stuff is really good. Outside the cockpit it varies a bit although it does have a consistent soundscape which I really appreciate. 3
