istari6 Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 (I'm sure this question has already been answered, but my search skills are failing. I've checked the VR forum, the Scripted Campaigns forum and done a search on "CPU" and other keywords here.) Question: I'm starting the "Havoc in the Kuban" campaign with the A-20B. My frame rates are quite bad, to the point it's really getting in the way of the experience. With Careers (both stock and PWCG), I've found the right balance in VR by turning front-line density to Scattered (stock Careers) or Ground to Low (PWCG). Yet I can't modify the Scripted Campaigns in the same way. What have other folks found as the key items to turn down that affect frame rates from ground object density? I'm assuming that's a CPU-bounded function. Appreciate any tips!
Zeev Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 I am not sure you will get better FPS in VR if you upgrade your CPU because VR mainly dependent on your GPU. Are you having a good FPS in Scripted Campaigns when not using VR?
istari6 Posted June 1, 2020 Author Posted June 1, 2020 I think it's primarily CPU-related slowdown due to the number of objects (either planes or ground). I say this because when I've had this kind of sluggishness before, dialing back the ground density helps. With Scripted Campaigns, that's not possible. I'm away from the computer for a week (traveling), so can't try it outside VR for a bit.
Jaegermeister Posted June 2, 2020 Posted June 2, 2020 I have found that in a scripted campaign in VR, you can significantly improve the frame rates by disabling all objects in the mission that are not within visual range. Either deleting vehicles and respawning them with a checkzone or a timer, or when they hit a certain waypoint. That creates new problems of its own. You don't want a vehicle column leaving your airfield when you take off, and then have it respawn leaving your airfield again when you return. If there is a firefight with 20 guns shooting 30 km away in one direction and a bunch of vehicles and AAA enabled at my home base, and I am flying along in between with 12 other aircraft, I get slow frame rates the entire mission and sluggish lagging as soon as the tracers start. If the airbase objects are disabled when I get to the firefight, my CPU has less to calculate. It's better since I upgraded to an 8 core 16 thread CPU architecture. I agree that it is CPU related from trying to calculate too many objects simultaneously. Tracers are particularly rough on framerates for me personally. I don't remember who said it, one of the Devs, but good performance in a scripted mission is all about conserving resources.
Gambit21 Posted June 2, 2020 Posted June 2, 2020 In testing my own campaign at 4K, I use medium clouds. FPS at 4K suffer otherwise.
istari6 Posted June 3, 2020 Author Posted June 3, 2020 Thanks guys. I've turned down clouds to Medium and it's helping somewhat. I'm reluctant to open and edit the missions directly, since part of the fun is the surprise of not knowing what I'll be encountering in a Scripted Campaign mission. But it's a good point that I might look to upgrade CPU in the near future as the numbers of Scripted Campaigns continue to grow.
istari6 Posted June 6, 2020 Author Posted June 6, 2020 Aha. Disabling mirrors for the P-39 would be lethal, but seems cost-free for the A-20B campaign. Will do, thanks.
