4.006 Crash: missing assets in Steam version swf folder?

I'm experiencing a consistent crash whenever I attempt to load a map using the Steam version of the game.  I tried a clean reinstall:

1. Ran steam uninstall

2. Deleted all local game files

3. Ran steam install

No mods, skins, or startup.cfg changes.  Game was working well prior to the update.  I normally run in VR but for these tests I've only loaded into VR once, the rest have been using my monitors only in non-VR mode with SteamVR not started.

Game loads normally to the menu screen.  Choose quick mission, choose a spawn, click start, game crashes within seconds.

IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\data\_gui.log.err file is created with the following entry alone:

Error: Unknown file format at URL "swf\il2/fonts/fonts.gfx"

I've included a crash dump from my latest attempt.

I'm on Win 10, Nvidia 1070, latest video drivers.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

This looks like it is resolved.  It appears that a simple reboot fixed the issue, so it's likely it was specific to my machine.

A little color in case it's helpful to someone in the future: Steam's local file validation tool was detecting 1 failed file every time I ran it, which led me to believe it might be antivirus interference.  When I went to check my AV settings via the Win10 system tray, I noticed there were a lot of items missing from the tray.  I had experienced a windows explorer crash-restart cycle earlier in the day and had not rebooted since, which I strongly suspect had something to do with the generally bad state my system was in.  I had also played around in Process Manager, killing some processes like Microsoft Photos and Skype that windows nefariously keeps alive with lots of resources, and I may have inadvertently killed something important to the system that caused the game to be unstable.

After a reboot (which admittedly, foolishly came AFTER I clean-reinstalled the game) the crash issue no longer persists and I'm able to get in to a mission as normal.

  • Thanks 1
