Feathered_IV Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 Yow, incredible work everybody. Absolutely brilliant!

Yeah, it's kind of a bad habit.... ? I really enjoy the model building and photography, so I just combined the two. The various kits made could almost be a thread in themselves. Birdman Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 (edited) awesome works everyone! Let me lower the the bar a bit :P, the Val is done: The decals have been the stuff of nightmare and I was probably too impatient with the panel line accent color but overall for a first model painted with airbrush I think it looks pretty darn cool. And the brush strokes from applying Plege are mostly invisible after an extra coat of Plege and the final xf-86 coat, so extra cool. Edited October 19, 2020 by Birdman 8 5
40plus Posted October 20, 2020 Posted October 20, 2020 Tis a beautiful bird Birdman. Don't sell yourself short.
Feathered_IV Posted October 20, 2020 Posted October 20, 2020 Indeed. It looks really good to me too. I like the very slight sheen to the paint finish. It makes it look much more alive than a flat coat of varnish.

Currently building some Japanese planes at moment too. You made the right choice with Hasegawa. I got the Tamiya version in an odd 1/50 scale with alot of rivets.

Thank you, I'm not fully sure how it came to be like that but I'll see if 3 coats of pledge + 2 light coats of xf86 gives me the same result for the next model. 6 hours ago, Hoots said: Looks wonderful, love the tailpane Thanks! The tail does make it stand out. It was my first Hasegawa kit and it has been fun to build, the only negative for me was the decals, it was a bit of pain to deal with them. I have a Kate in my stash also from Hasegawa and looking at how the val turned out it will be a nice build too I'm sure. Never heard of 1/50 scale, is it new or it's on older models ?
KiwiMcG Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 17 hours ago, Birdman said: Never heard of 1/50 scale, is it new or it's on older models ? Old - it's not the new shake 'n' bake kits Tamiya produce that falls into place. Rather basic compared to modern standards too. That engine above looks like it would fit right in with a Macchi M.C.72..
STN Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 OK. I give up before I mess up things even more. Let´s say it is finished It was.... quite an experience. Feathered_IV Posted October 24, 2020 Posted October 24, 2020 Incredible STN, congratulations! It looks absolutely brilliant.
STN Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 (edited) Thanks guys. Will have to sooth my nerves by working on something simple, with a few parts. Edited October 26, 2020 by STN adding photo 3
Birdman Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 The wife likes to go thrift shopping sometimes and this time there was something in it for me. A 1974 1/48 Kingfisher from Monogram! Decals are absolutely destroyed, the plastic is blue, there's a bunch of flashing but I'm super excited about that one. That's not what I had planned but I'll build this one next and because it was cheap I'm not feeling bad about trying new techniques on it and I think I can make it look good. 3
Matt Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 That's a perfect looking model STN. Love the red color. I ran out of clear coat to finish my previous models and my order takes forever to process, so i wanted to start painting one of the new models in the meantime and basically flipped a coin between the Slave I and AT-AT. Pretty happy with the chipping (even though it's a bit heavier than on the studio model). I think i'll use a sand yellow dust layer to tone down the vibrance of the colors and brighten up the black a bit. It will of course see tome more weathering with enamel washes and oil colors later on. 5 2
Feathered_IV Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Nice one Matt. It looks like huge fun to weather.
Tyberan Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 Those Bandai Star Wars kits are great, recently finished an x-wing and working on the At-At. 1

I agree, i own most kits of the original trilogy by now (have two more kits incoming) and would recommend every single one of them. Fantastic detail and smart construction. Even the more expensive kits are well worth the money imo. I still need to finish the X-Wing. I stripped the paint off twice already, because i wasn't happy with the paint job. Would've been easier to just buy another kit, but i think now it looks OK so far. I would like to see your result though. My AT-AT is fully primed and waiting for painting. I'll probably finish it before its little brother arrives. 1
Tyberan Posted October 29, 2020 Posted October 29, 2020 I was in Japan last year and bought the 1/144 y-wing which is by far the best fine moulding I've seen in a kit. A couple of pin washes and detail just pops out. I'm not good at taking photos but it's the best I can do. 4 1
Feathered_IV Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 That looks great. Those Bandai kits are hard to beat. Nice one Matt on the X-wing too. You suddenly had me thinking about how it would look to make one in a factory fresh, hand polished showroom finish.
Feathered_IV Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 Finished this little guy at long last. The blind flying hood was difficult to capture and it took several tries to get the shape and volume about right. Its made from 3 arches of nickel silver wire that were assembled over a non-stick former, then a couple of thick coats of primer were brushed over it so it shrunk and formed the creases. Some fine sprue made up the extending mechanism and that is pretty much it. Pretty happy with it, considering its only my second completed scratchbuild. Though typically, just as I was finishing it - an Italian company just announced they are doing one in resin... 13 1 4

Lusekofte Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Feathered. That is just astonishing. Unbelievable and uncomprehending for my brain and fat fingers to understand 2
Feathered_IV Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Hey thanks. I'm glad it worked out alright. I'd like to try painting over a white base coat next time. The grey or even black bases used in the larger scales are maybe not quite right for 1/144. It will be interesting to see what happens.
Matt Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 That looks fantastic Feathered. So much depth and detail on such a tiny model. I'm slowly wrapping up my Bandai kits. TIE-Advanced is done. Only used some dry brushing and very careful enamel wash (because of my previous issue with cracks on the Snowspeeder and horror stories i found online about imploding TIE-Fighters caused by enamel thinners). I guess it would look wrong if that fighter would be too heavily weathered anyway. TIE-Interceptor, B-Wing and Slave I basically just need a few decals and weathering. Will probably have them all done by the end of next week and then i'll continue work on the X-Wing and start working on the AT-AT. I also ordered the Millennium Falcon and AT-ST a couple of weeks back. I got sent the AT-AT again instead of the AT-ST by mistake and it seems like the Falcon got lost somewhere between Japan and Frankfurt (but maybe it's stuck in customs somewhere). 5 4
hetstaine Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 Very nice work Matt, i'm still working through WWII so space is still...far far away :) One day though for sure. Just finished Hasegawas 1998 P47 Razorback, very nice shake'n'bake kit. I got to mainly concentrate on the painting side of it and play around with tonal variety via 6 main colour layers and lightening and darkening my olive drab to achieve the look i was going for. Completed with an oil wash and a final clear coat of 50/50 matt/gloss. Great little basic kit that falls together nicely. Couple more since we are stuck at the 5mb limit and a 190 size comparison 15 3

hetstaine Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 Thanks Hoots, i really do need some better lighting for my pics though. Hopefully next year i can afford a better setup than a paper lined cardboard box and some cheap desk lamps! 1

It really pays off you played around with tonal variety via many colour layers to achieve that result. It creates a kind of depth to the skin of the plane. I think the best lighting is daylight. With the appropiate background it may look like a 1:1 real P-47. Just like KiwiMcG did here with his Bf109G-4: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/62136-plastic-modelers-in-the-il-2-community/page/47/?tab=comments#comment-1012100 2
