Spent the week pecking away at the Pfalz undercarriage.  I drew down some sterling silver wire and put it through a jewellers rolling mill to give it a flat .28x.47mm cross section.  Over the course of a couple of nights I was able to do an initial master, then use it as a pattern to make two additional pairs.  I'm trying to make as many jigs and masters as possible so that I can go back and make more of these little guys later. 

 

The steel mitre block below is such a fantastic thing to own  

 

 

The best thing to do would be to solder the undercarriage together so it could be attached to the fuselage with ease later on.  I got some laminex samples from a hardware store years ago, and they are really good for making soldering jigs.  The stuff doesn't burn readily, but can be cut and drilled with ease.  You can tack all your bits in place with superglue then snap the piece out after soldering. 

 

 

Needs a little bit of cleanup, but the end result is pretty good.  Although shortly after doing this I discovered that Valom just announced a D.IIIa in the same scale...

I thought airbrushing would be easier but I got a nice serving of humble pie lol! Living in a desert climate finding a decent thinning ration has been a bit difficult but overall I'm happy with the results. 60% thinner - 40% paint is more diluted than Tamiya recommends but seems to be alright for my situation, it's a good learning experience.

Tail is attached... sort of. Now to figure out how to deal with the rigging of the tail. It is getting increasingly difficult to handle. I am running out of safe spots where I can touch the damn thing :)

Added the Bandai AT-AT to the group of kits i'm currently working on. 

Fantastic kit. Very nicely detailed (like basically all Bandais) and absolutely everything that should be movable, is movable. The base plate is a bit small, but i guess it should be easy to make a custom base plate or just use no base plate at all. Painting should be fun though. And it should be perfectly suited for all sorts of weathering techniques. Really looking forward to that.

 

Also got the Slave One, but have not started working on it yet.

 

Remaining TIEs also got their first base coat. The top hatches are a bit tricky, because they are clear parts and i didn't prime them properly, so i'll have to redo those. Cockpits are finished too of course, a bit of a shame that very little is visible from the outside.

 

I'll hopefully have time on the weekend to finish the TIEs or maybe the B-Wing.

I made the old MPC AT AT many years ago .....looks like the Bandai one seems more accurate.

I was a bit bored today and just wanted to take a quick look at the Slave I kit...

 

 

Really wasn't planning to build it yet, but couldn't help myself. Atleast i can prime it together with the AT-AT and save some time.

 

This one will be a bit more challenging to paint though. But another nice Bandai kit. Construction was pretty easy and i like that nice big clear canopy glass.

i only managed to break one part on one of the wing, but that was completely my fault and it's not really visible.

 

Now i only need to resist buying a Falcon, which would fit perfectly right next to it.

Totally f'ed up the decals on my 1/48 Tamiya P-47 Razorback.  I touched two of them while they were still softened with Micro Sol, and disintegrated them!.  Where is the best place to find either replacements or alternatives?  Ebay?  Some specialty model store?

But the Falcon is the best ship! I would be dreadfully disappointed if it wasn't in your collection. Tell your wife/partner/significant other/conscience of my disappointment if they kick off.

Hehe, the only reason why i haven't bought the Falcon yet, is that Bandai only has the new trilogy Falcon models in 1/144. They also offer a classic 1/72 model, but that's too big, crazy expensive and would just be wasted on me, because it's more of an expert level model.

But i might have to order the Episode 9 model eventually, because it's the one that looks close enough to the classic Falcon. But first i'll really needed to finish the other models.

Look up your model kit on scalemates. They usually have links to accessories including decal kits.

Used decals from this company a few times. Was happy with them.

Tamiya ones were as hard as a plank, not even decalsoft was really of use.

Sorry for the very late response. My metal effect is achieved by the use of RunNBuff, what I have left of discontinued Model Master Alumina buffing metallizer. I do not use Alclad. The silver paint for the wings is Tamiya Lacquer XP-11. 

 

Just finished up another Eduard P-51D Chattanooga Choo Choo.

Disaster(s) struck, the clear coat left ugly brush marks, I got some white paint mist where it wasn't supposed to go because of poor masking (see left of the fuselage hinomaru). but on the bright side I made stencils for the hinomarus and some of the yellow stripes on the tail and airbrushed them and it worked out ok.

 

I'll have to airbrush some green again to cover that white mist. Hoping I won't be such a plum at masking next time XD.

Focke Wolf FW190 A-3, W.nr 223, Piloted by Hptm Hans 'Assi' Hahn. GruppenKommandeur of the III./JG2 in Beaumont le Roger, France, May 4, 1942, 'Assi' Hahn had 60 Victories. 61 painted on the Tail, before being transferred to the Eastern front.

in total Achievement 108 Confirmed Victories of which, 68 were on the Western front.

Manufacturer: TAMIYA

Scale: 1:48

Fittings: perfect, except for the fitting on the left wing where we will have to work with putty and files.

Camouflages to be made: 3 optional. or infinite if you know or feel like making templates. hihihi. In short, a model from the year 1992 that is still up to date and with a very acceptable price.

I present Plane and Custom Base for III./JG2. I hope you enjoy this replica as I have managed to give it some soft but natural tones. based on several techniques including the Watercolor pencils.

Some B-Wing progress. Not as much as i hoped i could do this weekend. 

 

Only painted cockpit, pilot figure, engines, weapons and some other details. Happy with the cockpit and engines, not too happy with the pilot face and the chipping on the orange markings, but i think it's the best i can do. Also repainted some parts in a darker grey, that still needs some shading. Also still needs decals, washes and oil paints.

 

 

Also repainted the TIEs and primed the Slave I + AT-AT. I'm kind of tempted to focus on the AT-AT next though.

My Savoia S55 kit just arrived from Dora wings. It took a fair while for it to arrive from the Ukraine to Canada but I'm in no hurry. I went for the torpedo bomber version as I intend to paint it up in the livery of the Italian air force from Porco Rosso.

 

Very impressed with the amount of detail. Photo etch parts included in the base kit and a bunch of other nice touches. But holy hell is there a lot more flash that I'm used to. The sprew molds must be getting tired.

That pretty much sums up most of the short run kits. Lots of flash clean up. Plus I recommend stocking up on filler
So far, I can advise You to prepare for these areas that were (at least for me) really problematic.

1. fitting the wings onto the middle section- massive adjustments of the supporting beams that go through the middle section were needed as well as a bit of violence to adjust the wing shape where it attaches to the middle section.

 

2. fitting the hulls to the middle section- it does not fit right, it will leave gaps between that will require filling. So in case You plan to paint the hulls separately and then just attach them- forget it.

 

3. the tail- unfortunately I have underestimated this and have to handle the model very carefully now. The 4 attaching points of the tail booms to the middle section/hulls are very feeble and need some reinforcement. The tail surfaces when put together are quite heavy and create a momentum that will cause the whole tail to come loose eventually. If I did this again, I would introduce at least some wire reinforcements- this is critical mainly where the tail booms attach to the hulls.  Also- I recommend to rework the attachment of the tail middle fin to the tail wing. It is really bad and does not hold it in place.

 

The hulls themselves require some filing and adjusting of the support walls/beams(?) otherwise You will not be able to get it together. But noting serious.

Trumpet er's 1/24 Bf109G-6 (early) of Anton Hackl while with III. /JG 11 during 1944. Nice kit but some parts needlessly complex like half an exhaust x 24 to glue together, otherwise straightforward. Painted with Model Master II RLM Enamels of Gray Violet/Gray Green and Light Blue/Gray. Weathered with Windsor and Newton Burnt Umber and Brown oils. Does come with clear parts to see interior/engine and decals were actually good to use and sealed well.

Another complication occurred during engine montage. There are L shaped openings on the backside of the cooler. That is where the engine chassis attaches to it.
The original openings are placed too high. It is necessary to make new ones, lower. Otherwise the engine will not align with the opening in the cooler. Unfortunately I found out the hard way- with everything painted and varnished. Made new openings, but they look very crude plus the old ones are just gaping there. Will try and cover it up somehow.

 

40plus: You might find this info useful along with the picture. It was very frustrating to discover it at this stage ?
