Birdman Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Couldn't source the Tamiya varnish so ended up getting a spray can for acrylic paintings instead, tried to recreate the iconic Japanese plane chipping this is the progress so far: Note paint cabin 2.0 (patent pending) ? I'll try to do a wash as well, I was thinking of using a dark brown base considering these planes were used on dirt strips. 4 1
40plus Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Wow she is really coming together nicely. Great work! ......I really need to back to my models 1
Feathered_IV Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Wow the Zero looks fantastic! Full marks for doing a restrained amount of chipping too. A6M’s were primed and painted very well, especially at that stage of the war and many people confuse them with Army aircraft which were camouflaged in the field. 1
Feathered_IV Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 Pooped out a set of these, using my jeweller's drill and some needle files as a sort of poor-man's lathe. They are quite small. Only about 3.8mm long, so I had to simplify them a bit by making the taper at the rear a little thicker so they didn't fall apart on me. The improvised bomb racks on the magister are a strange bedframe sort of design. The parts are so fine in 1/144 that I had a really hard time trying to work out how to do it. I had a go at soldering it and also making from sprue, but neither was a success. In the end I decided to cheat. I've got some .25mm acrylic sheet that is beautifully clear, so I masked and sprayed the framework onto a piece of the stuff. Being largely hidden from view beneath the aircraft it should be very difficult to pick it as a solid piece. Theres some notches cut into it that will allow the legs to get glued in firmly. With luck it should be pretty strong once it is assembled. Added the gas patch too with the red tape around the edge using bits of painted decal. Will need to tone it down but pretty happy with it so far. 5 1
Birdman Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 And that's it, the zero is finished: The dark brown wash didn't really work unfortunately, stuff to improve on haha. I have decided to keep the gloss finish as I like it that way. This build has been a learning experience getting back into the hobby and I've learned a few things to make the next one better (hopefully). Speaking of which I picked up this bad boy: Now that I have all the Japanese aircraft paint I think I'll do a few more IJN planes. 7

I have been modeling most of my life.......you never stop learning new skills ,cheats, or short cuts . You kinda find stuff that works until you find something better, quicker, easier in my experience. Great work. Edited August 23, 2020 by voncrapenhauser 1

Yes, I've taken notes of a bunch of things I'd have done differently with hindsight and I'll apply that to the next one!
voncrapenhauser Posted August 25, 2020 Author Posted August 25, 2020 Sweet! Look forward to The Val. 1
Birdman Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 I was doing some weathering practice on left over parts from the Zero so paint, clear coat left to cure for 36h (I live in a very dry region) and then Tamiya panel accent color. Well the tamiya wash ate right through the clear coat. I'm not sure if I should forget about the panel line color and go for oil washes instead, what worries me is my clear coat has turpentine in its ingredients so I assume it's gonna be an issue with oil washes as well. Man, chemistry classes are so far away haha
voncrapenhauser Posted August 27, 2020 Author Posted August 27, 2020 I use Florey models washes , they are clay based and have no problems to date. Only tip I use is not to let dry more than a couple of hours on Matt surfaces I always satin first add decals and wash last before re matting all surfaces to get even reflective quality. 1

Ok, I'll look into this. Thanks!
Tyberan Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 I've always adhered to the polar non polar chemicals. Ie if using an acrylic alcohol based clear use enamel washes, and vice versa for enamel clear coats use alcohol based washes. I generally use acrylics now but make my home washes using oderless turps and oil paints. 1
40plus Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 I paint acrylic, clear enamel, wash acrylic......seems to work. I've also had decent success with acrylics for all three coats if I'm gentle. The Tamiya clears are pretty tough even when you hit them with further acrylic layers. Not completely resilient though. they do start to get soft if you are too aggressive.
Tyberan Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 Yeah washes are good but I find working in small areas helps as well to prevent any solvent from soaking in. Man I need to build something again. 1
Feathered_IV Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 Had a slight change of plans... Managed to get some good advice on the bomb colours and some much better drawings of the 20lb fragmentation bombs. The previous ones were based on 25 pounders that it turns out have a rather different profile. Made a new set during the week and took the airbrush out for a run this morning. Much happier with these ones. 2 2
Feathered_IV Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 My dear chap, I am actual size! Got the bombs and the glazing on today. Almost there... 3 1

FMF*BarracudaCZ Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 I really like flying with Pe-2, so I really liked to build a model in 1:48 scale from the company Eduard. 12 3
FMF*BarracudaCZ Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 I will add a video from the complete construction of Pe-2 2
Birdman Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 (edited) Very nice work Barracuda! Also thanks to every one that commented on my clear coat problems, I haven't individually responded but the comments are much appreciated. First update on the Val, the cockpit is about 75% done, I have completed the weathering (the rest is the radio assembly which is its own and is done later) and applied a matte coat: It has been more difficult than the zero with lots of small parts but I'm fairly happy of how it turned out so far. STN Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Progress on the Savoia has been slow. Lots of filler, sanding, spraying, checking and then the same exercise again. Still some ahead. The detailing on this thing will be a pain in the ass. I was hoping for completing the hulls separately and just attaching them, but it was not to be. There would be massive gaps left between the wing and the hulls themselves, so have to do it on the whole thing put together. 4
40plus Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 (edited) Progress has been glacial yslow, what with the new baby in our house and a summer full of home improvement but I have managed to block out the main color scheme on my 1:200 Junkers 88. I think I went too light on the grey but I can live with it. Maybe I can darken it with washes. The nacel fronts will be bright yellow along with the rudder. I'll paint that next. Feathered_IV Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 That looks really good! I wouldn’t mind trying some of those one day.
XQ_Lothar29 Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 ACADEMY 1:48 Old mold that has its pluses and minuses! If you don't want to spend a lot of money and want to practice, it is a good option. A little history about the model. -BF109 G2 / Trop W.rn. 14256 "GELBE 14" Africa. Hptm Hans Joachim Marseille. At the time of his accidental death, September 30, 1942 in Sidi Abdel Rahman, Egypt he had 158 Kills all against the Desert RAF, he was only 22 years old. The Star of Africa, as he was called "Stern Von Afrika" was the pilot With impeccable clean palm groves, Undefeated was the word they put in the place where they raised the Little Pyramid, which still stands today in Egypt. bad luck came to him on September 30, 1942 when his brand new BF109 G2 had engine problems. when his companions saw his body hit the horizontal tail stabilizer, leaving him unconscious or killing him and he could not open the parachute. So here I show you the last Airplane, used by this great and young Pilot. the feat that made him famous was the one-day shooting down of 17 planes. I hope you like the plane. Spoiler 2

STN Posted September 6, 2020 Posted September 6, 2020 A bit of colour. Will need to put together and paint entire sections separately due to the complicated shape. The rigging on this one is a bitch. Only plausible way is the EZ line, which I used on the tail section, but the rigging itself should be actually silver/aluminium colour. Any tips on how to paint EZ line? As per my experience, it does not take colour. 3

Feathered_IV Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 AK Interactive just announced their latest "art" book. They show you how to scratchbuild your own Nazi gas chamber and weather it appropriately with their new range of products. They also show you how to create a diorama of Rwandan mass graves and paint a figure who is shooting up. Plus they briefly teased a new resin figure of a drowned child... wtf?? 1 1

Birdman Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 One modelling youtuber posted about that and AK took down a few videos about the book it seems as well as cleaning the comments on their various social media platforms. A tiny bit of progress on the Val: It now has its wings and I have spent the last sessions experimenting with new (to me) techniques : puttying and sanding. The goal being removing seam lines and making smoother transitions between assemblies. It's a lot of work but it will be worth it in the end. I have the upper / lower fuselage and the transition between the wing assembly and the fuselage are smoothed out. I still need to work on the wings leading edges and other small bits around the engine area. 1 4
