STN Posted December 3, 2019 Posted December 3, 2019 Almost done. But it wouldn't be me if something did not happen. During applying / removing the wash I let the Horten fall to the ground.... twice... resulting in breaking the right wing off and the right engine coming off inside. Fixed the mess the best I could but it is still visible. Yep... I am the king of retards ? 1 1

Like you, twice. Busted the gear and all the thin delicate antennas off the bottom......twice. The Horton looks fantastic.
STN Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Ok, I officially pronounce this build finished. Horten 229 1:72 Revell/Dragon scheme is... hmm.. let´s say "what if" 7 3
40plus Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Awesome! I've always loved the giant balloon tire up front.
STN Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Yeah one of the bizarre features of the plane. Never understood what is behind the design of the giant wheel. Does it have something to do with the weight distribution/centre of gravity?

I was just thinking how beautiful and graceful it looked and then that front tyre came into view and it was ehhhhh... no. One only to be seen in the sky... STN, maybe to get the right incidence on the ground? Lack of elevator control to rotate maybe. Totally guessing here
MiloMorai Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 Wiki. The aircraft utilized retractable tricycle landing gear, with the nose gear on the first two prototypes sourced from a He 177's tailwheel system, with the third prototype using an He 177A main gear wheelrim and tire on its custom-designed nose gear strut work and wheel fork.
STN Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 An attemp of pre-shading. The kit has VERY delicate panel lines and bolts. I hope I don't clog them with paint. 1
Feathered_IV Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 Looks tricky. It must have almost as much in common with car kits as it does with aircraft modelling.
STN Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 Actually, the kit is very precise considered the fact, it is all resin. The few problems and need to use filler are solely due to my clumsiness this time. I am definitely getting one or two more from this manufacturer. Gotta save some money though, they are a bit pricy.
STN Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 Done. I can only recommend this kit and the company. Very precise kit, easy to build. I managed to screw up a few things as usually, but this is solely due to my clumsiness. I wanted to build the World Speed Record version, but noticed too late (after painting) that the world record version does not have the radiator below the cockpit. So instead I found a picture of some unspecified version that sort of matches. Macchi MC 72 M.M. 179 1933 (?) 1:72 SBS model Forgot to add the photo of the original 3 7
A_radek Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 Lovely STN! Did you do the rivet lines or were those original surface detail?
STN Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 It is original detail. I was amazed at the fine details. Will be definitely getting a few more kits from this company in near future.
40plus Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 My brother surprised me with these two kits under the tree this Christmas. Needless to say, I'm super excited to build them. They may just just the queue of four other kits waiting to be completed. Mmmm ..... Porko Rosso 2 2

Feathered_IV Posted December 28, 2019 Posted December 28, 2019 Been enjoying some Flying Circus lately, so I put a bit more time into my on again/off again scratchbuild of the Pfalz D.IIIa. Adding some inlets and outlets, plus the circular inspection panels and locations for the cabane struts. 2 3
STN Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 Very nice and soooo clean! Meanwhile, I continue reducing my boxes stash.

40plus Posted January 9, 2020 Posted January 9, 2020 IL-2 cockpit progress made over the holidays. 1:32 Hobbyboss kit. I had never seen a dashboard like this before as it is made of clear plastic. I'm told it's not uncommon but was new to me. Instructions said to stick the decal on the outside front cafe as usual but I opted to hand paint the front and apply the decal "backwards" on the back side. That gave me rather nice looking gauge lenses. The rest is stil just painted with based colours. waiting on some more clear coat so I can apply washes. 3 2
STN Posted January 11, 2020 Posted January 11, 2020 Done. Not as clean as I would like to, but anyway... Yokosuka MXY7- model 43 K1 KAI Japan 1945 1:72 Brengun 5 1
STN Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 And now... for something completely different... 1
Feathered_IV Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 Made a simple jig to hold the Pfalz fuselage with the thrust-line aligned with the upper edge of the sheet. An identical rectangle was superimposed over my digital drawings so I could plot the position of any detail and easily transfer it to the model. It also allows the shapes to be confirmed and tweaked as necessary. Pretty happy with the shape now. Also masked up the wings the same way as the Sparrowhawk a few pages back. A coat of primer... Then unmask and polish the ribs back to blend them in. Then do it again. Ugh! Lots of subtle cleanup to do, but nearly there with the main assemblies. 3 3
Tyberan Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 What's the plan you got as the work bench, looks like a nice idea. I assume it's an albatross plan?
Feathered_IV Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 Hi Tyberan. Those are Pfalz’s factory drawings for the D.IIIa. They were very useful when doing the wings as the cross sections have all the dimensions on them.
voncrapenhauser Posted January 23, 2020 Author Posted January 23, 2020 (edited) Finally finished the figure. From original artwork, to 1/4 scale action figure conversion. With Major sculpting headaches. 1st time sculpting in this huge scale. Sword and belt buckle detail is etched brass parts. Nice practice for next big figure. Feathered_IV Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 That looks amazing. I've done a fair bit of sculpture, but nothing near that size. You really make me want to have a go. Who is the character? I'm not sure I recognise her.
voncrapenhauser Posted January 27, 2020 Author Posted January 27, 2020 (edited) Thanks for the Encouragement. I used Aves epoxysculpt, it has a working time when mixed of around 2 hours then cures as an epoxy normally dose. You can also use a wetted finger or any tool to get a smooth finish, meaning minimal sanding needed. The character is an old D n D role playing character from years back called "Tsu", a Half Elf Rouge thief type. The artwork was drawn by a very good friend of mine the coloring was done with photoshop by myself a long long time ago and has taken a long while to finally do a figure sculpt. I am not too displeased with the outcome considering its my first attempt sculpting in this scale. But for sure the sculpting epoxy was way easier to use than I anticipated and for some of your models Feathered would probably be a godsend for making parts like seats and alike. Edited January 27, 2020 by voncrapenhauser Bad spelling....I think.
HappyHaddock Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 (edited) Sculpting figures for table top war games manufacturers and other model accessories manufacturers has been a big part of my professional employment for many years, though always at the "miniature" end of model making; typically under 40mm tall (1/43 rd scale down to 1/300th scale) though the smallest I have so far created as a one off (rather than for reproduction and sale as castings) was 1/800th scale where I ended up carving human hair for the finer details I wouldn't be without epoxy putty and would put in a shout for three brands, Kneadatite, Milliput and Pro-sculpt. All have epoxy as the active hardening agent but all use different inert fillers giving them different working properties, but in sharing the same active ingredient all can be blended with one another to achieve what ever working property I need to suit the style and detail of figure required by my clients. However, like you mentioning that this was a first attempt at this scale, I too today have been working on a commission that's a big stretch from my usual work; a 200mm tall (1/9th scale) sculpt of a character form a 70's comic; that being Major Eazy. If it turns out OK I may have to post a picture or two here. HH Edited January 27, 2020 by HappyHaddock 5 2

Very little clean up needed primed and starting to paint with alclad chrome. Nice looking model... one of the varied model makers I know through work must have 30-40 years in the FX business and was heavily involved in the recent wonder woman movie... but hey you could name almost any Sci-Fi/fantasy/Superhero movie from the original Star Wars onwards and there's probably a 50/50 chance that he had a hand in the FX work. Although he's UK based he's kind of the "go to guy" when Hollywood studios with big budgets need to quickly get a lot of pre-vis done prior to committing even bigger budgets to the actual stuff seen on screen... It's frightening how quickly he can spend a few million dollars making a "mock up" of a movie simply in order to help producers/directors decide how best to spend $100million or more. Alas, although my own client list does include the odd Oscar/BAFTA winner here or there, my prop. making and FX work is more of a side line thing than a primary source of income. However the insane deadlines and turnaround times of TV film work aren't conducive to producing good work... so perhaps I'm happier with private collectors as clients after all.
