Managed to get the Shiden completed, and I've been chopping up one of Eduard's 1/144th scale Spitfire IX's for something a little different.

Shortened the nose to bring back the exhausts, then extended the front with a carefully downturned snout.  New spinner, blades, tail & radiator, and lots of filler later, and I'm well on the way to a Mk XIV.

And now, bring the rivets and panel lines back. :o:
I would not have had the courage to do that cut.
+1!

Very nice work. I'm waiting for you to convert that matchstick into a Dornier 17.

Hehe, that gave me a proper belly laugh over breakfast.

Rescribing has since been done too YD.  I kept the cowling lines fairly prominent, and rub back the other panels which are way over-scale in 144th.  I noticed from the photos that there is a noticeable seam along the cannon barrels, so I got rid of that too.  Hopefully I can start getting some paint on it soon.

I see some of the old IL-2 gang is here, I used to go by Jagdgeschwader2 on the old IL-2 forum.  Here's a few of mine.

One of my other radio control projects is this semi scale Hughes MD500E.  I'm using Trex 250 mechanics  with a four bladed rotor head conversion. Still has a long way to go.  Lot's more projects I'm working on, just need the time.

Nice to see you as well, I'm very happy to see IL-2 live on again, still playing with my controls and getting used to the aircraft before I go online.  I should be easy prey once I get there.

The hurricane is still in a box in my closet, 1/24 turned out to be a bit too large and I only display it occasionally.  Glad to see you picked up the modelling habit, it's something you'll never put down.

Here's my next project, 1/32 IL-2 single seater.  I really don't need another project with all the unfinished ones sitting around but, what the heck!  I'll post some build shots once I start on it.  Thinking I'll do an in flight model with this one.

Hi everyone i see you have all been busy..and i see there is some new editions to the thread as well..Welcome , great work everyone. The stringbag is not far off now , been working on and off on it as ive been busy lately , the photo etch rigging was a bugger but got it done in the end , Paint is done, decals are done, just working on the weathering at the moment , a week or two and its done... :)

Looking forward to seeing it.  I'd love to have a Swordfish in my own little collection.

So I wanted to try my hand at this again. The last airplane model I did was back pre 2005 and all I did was assemble and not paint. The other day I saw how cheap a 1/72 scale Wildcat with paints included was and I had to give it another try.

I recently got out of tabletop miniatures and there seemed to be 3 main tips for painting that I used that made models look great:

1) Thin paints correctly

2) Use a nuln oil wash after first coat of paint to bring out the "shadow effect" in creases of the model

3) dry brush for highlights or weathering (I never got around to trying this as I generally liked my models to be clean looking and it also seemed kind of intimidating to do this over a paint job I was already happy with)

So I decided to watch some youtube timelaps plane kit builds and boy is my head spinning. These guys are using charcoal, chalk paint, airbrush, graphite, making their own washes, etc...

I'd like to ask here, if it's ok, what main techniques you guys use? Also if the 3 I mentioned still work well on models since airplanes are not only different from miniatures, but also generally larger? Another thing I noticed is people don't seem to prime model airplanes, but it was always highly suggested on tabletop miniatures.

Well it all depends on how much time You want to invest in the builds itself. There are many techniques You can use to enhance the looks. You just needs to find out which ones work best for You. A trial-error system.

First of all don´t expect wonders from Yourself and don´t try to apply all the techniques from the beginning. Not sure how much modelling experience You have, but for the start try to concentrate on the cleanliness of the build (correct fitting, correct geometry, learn how to use the filler etc.) I am still fighting myself with some of the metioned things.

Idealy start with some cheaper kits, not to end up frustrated. Also You can try new techniques on these and won´t feel too sorry about ruining something.

As for the techniques- I myself do not use a primer/surfacer and substitute it with light colour sprayed over the kit. Then there are things like preshading, postshading, polishing, fading, wash, riveting and many more. I also use highlighting in a small measure in the cockpit.

The best would be to join some sort of forum, like the Czech one I visit for quite some time now: www.modelforum.cz
Usually there is a ton of inspiration and many people willing to help and give advice.

Hmm, I'm still not sure about markings.  There are so few options in 1/144th when it comes to decals aftermarket and things.  I think it will need to be an RCAF machine from 402 Sqn, but even that is pushing it.

Managed to get the top coat on after a few hiccups, but it came out pretty smoothly in the end.  Looking forward to doing an aircraft one day that doesn't require yellow ID bands on the wing leading edges...

Very pieces of work Feathered & STN :)

Hope to post some shots soon of my latest WIP. 48 scale B-17G.

I am, however, wondering if buying Eduards Big Ed PE set for was a good idea. Getting a fair bit eye strain folding the bits a pieces... but enjoying the effort though.

Feathered, what better than a 1945 two bob bit to illustrate scale!

STN, That is lovely. Another handsome wooden prop. Oil paint?

Posted

Thanks Sallee. No oil paint. Just regular Tamiya acrylics.

Posted

Nothing special really, just apply the base colour XF 57 and then carefully applied thin streaks of thinned down XF 64 with just very little colour on the brush. After a coat of gloss clear apply bit of the brown Tamiya panel accent, wipe it off a bit and seal with flat clear.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to try that. It won't take days to dry like oils!

Just opened another box. I wonder how it will go. Read some nasty stuff about this kit.

Great Natter, STN, nice to see some of the weirder designs and love the Lysander, Built the old matchbox 32nd one a few years back now..

I'm busy on a 1/4 scale fantasy figure atm but can't spend enough time on it atm :( busy working.

Its a conversion from the Neca Harley quin action figure I got for Crimbo.

You bet.

I did a little R/c in my time too.

Have a plan to build an R/C 1/6th scale Chris Craft Barrel back Runabout in near future  (that's a 1930's all wood speedboat for any that don't know) Got the keel and ribs cut and all the wood, but sadly not the time atm....Future project methinks.

Here a few shots of the Fortress build that's a WIP.  It will eventually be part of a dio.  I'm waiting for the Hasegawa Willys Jeep to arrive which will placed in front of the bomb cart.

The crew are a mix between the figures that come with the kit, Verlinden's Bomber crew, and ICM,s USAAF Ground crew.

I've cut out the front hatch, Bomb doors and rear door so they'll be open.

It's very slow work with having to cut and grind bits off and replace it with e PE stuff.

That'll do for now, back to it ;)

Cheers Carts.  I hope more people post some shots of their work.  I'm having a go at a bit of scratch building lately.  It's a tricky business at this scale!
