Remontti Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 Hello friends, I've been mostly flying with monitor although I've Oculus Rift CV1. The increased performance brought by the recent patches got me re-excited about VR. My biggest disappointments with my VR were performance dips with action around you and resolution (and the difficulty of identification of a plane type). Now my performance is mostly 89 or 90 fps in a furball and the recent hotfix made identification so much easier. The small field of view wasn't so much of a issue to me. So I'm thinking about Rift S since it is more affordable. Valve Index sure seems nice but I'm concerned that then I would also have to upgrade processor / motherboard. My understanding is that there is still a noticeable improvement in image quality versus the Rift CV1 without need to upgrade other hardware. But Rift S was released like a year ago. Is it still worthwhile to buy one? What supersampling should I set for CV1 with Oculus Tray Tool so it would be as demanding as Rift S's native resolution? I would like to make sure I can keep up 80fps in missions.
O_DesoLunatic Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 (edited) Rift S should have 1280 × 1440 per eye. I would test 110 - 140% of this res because some supersampling will look much better than native res. Edit Not sure if the setting in Tray Tool should be changed based on the ratio of total amount of pixels available, if yes that should be 1.42 and multipy it further by the amount of supersampling so for example 1.42 x 1.2 = 1.704 so pick val ue closest to that. dburne Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 I found Rift S to be a nice upgrade in image quality over my CV1. Due to it being an 80 hz device versus the 90hz CV1, performance remained about the same.
AuburnAlumni Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 There is definitely a noticeable improvement in clarity going from OG Rift to Rift S. With the latest update...I'm running SS at 1.3 with very clear picture and rock solid 80 FPS in my sorties. Oculus Rift S is a great headset and nothing in the market can touch it for the combination of quality AND price.
kuk111 Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 Def a nice upgrade. The rift S went with LCD panels allowing for 3 sub pixels. This, with the updated lenses greatly reduces Screen door effect from OG rift. Also you will not need to have sensors everywhere and a ton of USB ports
Remontti Posted May 29, 2020 Author Posted May 29, 2020 Thanks for the answers. I think I'm going to get one...

I also run 1.3 SS.

Alonzo Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 I'm running my Rift S with 2x MSAA and zero supersample (well, 100% I guess). It looks really great to me. Your 2080ti will be completely fine, I only have a 2080. dburne has a 2080ti and runs his at 1.3 pixel density.
VR-DriftaholiC Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 If you need some more FPS try using balanced or even low preset, no grass and no far city blocks. These all create extra draw calls on the cpu rendering objects at longer ranges which is probably where you are most limited.

ECV56_Lubermatz Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 I had CV1 and upgraded to S. Was a great change in clarity and image quality. Has a couple of drawbacks, like microphone or headphones, that you would have to solve somehow (I did with a pair of earbuds and a desktop mic). Its really good in price quality relation. I run it with 4x MSAA and SS at 100% and have almost always steady 80 fps, except on busy servers or furballs, when I get some sttuters, but not affecting my combat performance. Definitely worth it.
Remontti Posted June 1, 2020 Author Posted June 1, 2020 The day I posted first message they were available in Oculus store. But while I was entering credit card number they went out of stock. 'doh!
Remontti Posted June 2, 2020 Author Posted June 2, 2020 Call me impatient but I ordered Reverb since they were available and price difference wasn't that great.

Also waiting for new nvidia cards.
