Spitfire IX ML365/ JW of Gp Capt P R Walker, No 135 Wing, B65 Maldeghem, Belgium, November 1944 ‘Johnnie’ Walker was a pre-war RAF pilot who became an ace during the Battle of France, and by late 1944 he commanded No 135 Wing in 2nd TAF, with fellow ace Wg Cdr Ray Harries as the wing leader. Walker occasionally flew on operations with his squadrons, and had his own personally marked Spitfire IX that not only bore his initials but also wore a nose marking that appears to be a depiction of the famous Johnnie Walker whisky label. Walker remained in command of the Wing until the end of the war, whilst ML365, which was on the ‘books’ of Nos 349 and 485 Sqns, also survived and is believed to have been transferred to France post-war.
