GridTac Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 Hey guys just wanted to start a post to track everyone's experience with the new zoom update from the developers. So post your headset and what you found! I'll start with saying that the guys from 1CGS and Jason have really stepped up here. I think the current solution is great and a good balance between what we had and what was asked of them. On to my experience. Headset: HP reverb v2 Graphics card: RTX 2080 Super The overall experience for me hasn't changed significantly regarding fps. I still get a constant 50-60 frames aside from the normal stuff, cities, airfield spawn in, etc. The zoom is functioning as expected and I have no distortion. There is a bit of comfort issue with ipd once zoomed, but not overly exaggerated. I was able to use the in game ipd adjustment to set -3% and I was very close to perfect. Identifying targets at 1km is possible and a huge help for me personally. Spotting remained unchanged for the most part which isn't a negative. If you post on this topic please be cordial and don't flame. This is for documenting your experience and outcome of the patch and not emotional or aggressive comments. Let's all be constructive here. Thanks guys and thank you 1C!
69th_Bazzer Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 It's a large and welcome improvement. I appreciate the effort! For me, it still renders a/c smaller in zoom than regular view, until they are about 1km away. It makes anything beyond that range already spotted kind of comically disappear when you zoom in. This was never my experience with zoom in 2D. It does help ID when you are in closer than ~1km, where a/c do enlarge when zoomed. This is s big step in the right direction, and I really appreciate the devs are moving this way.

As for 2d, it’s there, but highly resolution dependent.
Bernard_IV Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 Are you running max settings or low CPU frequency? That's pretty low fps for a 2080

I like the shinnies. Msaa x2 My CPU is a core i7 9700. Even on balanced settings I never really seemed to get better than 60-65 on the reverb so I deduced it was probably CPU bottleneck. Big improvement, nice work devs! 1
Bernard_IV Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 (edited) Maybe something is wrong? I'm running weaker hardware than you and I get 80-90 fps with my Reverb. 7700k 5.0ghz overclock with 3200 CAS14 ram and a 1080 ti. No anti aliasing and native resolution, quite a bit of stuff turned down for contact spotting visibility and FPS preferred over shiny graphics. Edited May 30, 2020 by Bernard_IV
GridTac Posted May 30, 2020 Author Posted May 30, 2020 Possibly Bernard but I've tried a lot of stuff and honestly gave up with good enough. I'm not running anything higher than 1.0 SS either. I get 90fps in single player no problem. It's something about online.

What settings are you using for best spotting? My spotting has gone to crap since the lastest patch. I have changed to some of Fenris's settings which have helped some. On topic: I have found the new zoom to be too much for close viewing and not enough zoom for far viewing. I definitely believe we need two zoom options - i.e 1.5-2x zoom and a 5x zoom. I was using three different zoom levels with 3Dmigoto mod. Edited May 30, 2020 by Wraithzlt

I concur ..while I greatly appreciate the in game zoom is way better than it was and was quickly implemented ..I really miss the medium range zoom (I used the most) and the way it snapped to the view not slowly zoomed in.... Other than that its working well here Reverb/1080Ti/i7-9700K @ 5.0

Can't recall of top of my head the setting value to change. 1
FTC_horsky Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 vr_zoom_speed = 1 snaps the zoom instead of the slow zoom in 1

VR-DriftaholiC Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 Hoping for axis or scroll binding of zoom in the future so we can choose how far to zoom in. Hard to read gauges due to over zooming now but that's far less important than being able to identify planes.

If they could just add original zoom back as an option, having two levels, seems would achieve that. I don't know though, I used it this afternoon and zoomed in on some gauges just to see, was a little clunky but had no trouble seeing them really. Most guages I can see without zooming anyway. But certainly it helps a lot in zooming in on possible targets. Edited May 31, 2020 by dburne
