Hey guys, I recently reinstalled the game. However, when I try to run it, all I get is a black screen for one or two seconds, then a crash to desktop. Any ideas of what’s going on?

Okay, I tried manually restoring my old settings, and reinstalling mods in case one didn’t uninstall properly,  but no joy. Any ideas?

I’ve updated my drivers, but the issue is still there.

I am not especially versed in the mysteries of tech, so I probably cannot solve your problem, but I have observed that people who specify their problem more tend to get it solved more often.   So more information might help:

- Steam or Installer versions?

- Any problems with any other applications or games?

- What graphics card?

Just for starters.

Installer version, no other problems, graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970.

Hi mate,

I know you're not new here - I already saw you on several occasions on this forum. So, you told us that you did a full reinstall of the game. Now, what was the

reason doing this? I mean, nobody does this without any reason? Any issues before this step? Anyway, as you mentioned mods, I assume you did use mods

and maybe you suspected one of the mods causing some trouble.

Now, I also use some of the mods. That's why I have two installations of the game. One under Steam is the default one, so without any mods. The second one

is a stand alone installation which I use for mods. If something bad happens with the mods, the at least I have a clean installation under Steam.

But here the question is not about Steam or not Steam - you can also have two installations without using Steam, but I think you know that.

Talking about mods and updates it is very important to deactivate all mods before you update your game. The problem with mods also is, if you installed

mods manually, meaning without JSGME / OvGME mod enabler tools, you have no control about the mods at all.

Then, make sure not to install your game in the default directory (program files) for stand alone installation. Choose your own directory like f.ex. C:\games

or whatever. This ensures you have the full control of your game (rights management wise).

So, with all of this and you still have trouble, I'd suggest to delete the startup.cfg file in your game's directory as a first rule. The restart your game and see,

if the game starts correctly. The game will create a new startup.cfg file for you. Make also sure, this file is not write protected (read-only).

If your system is heavily overclocked, then make sure to try to start your game with the default settings. Some OC steps sometimes may cause some issues.

These are some of my thoughts to begin with. Hope this also might help you.

Cheers

Alright, I was downloading a fresh install into my own directory when you wrote this. Still had the issue, so I deleted startup.cfg. Still no success, and neither starting launcher.exe nor Il-2.exe recreated the startup.cfg file.

This is why I had to reinstall, by the way: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/62035-loading-issues-after-hotfix/?tab=comments#comment-947725

Strange - this usually works 100%. Are you sure about the access rights given to your game directory? Check with the file explorer,

if your game directory isn't set to read-only (right-click on the said directory - properties - read-only tick box).

Okay, I’ve tried with read-only on and off, but no change.

So with this you mean when starting the game, you don't get a new startup.cfg file, right?

Well, if I think of it and you're telling me, that the game doesn't even start correctly resp. not at all, this would also explain why

there is no startup.cfg file created.

Is there any particularity of your system we might not know? Any devices causing some issues in the past?

And does your system work correctly otherwise, meaning can you run other games/programs without trouble?

P.S.: in the meantime, maybe try with my startup.cfg file - I have the same GPU like you. Just for a start and to look what it does.
Just rename the file extension from txt to cfg.

Nope, no particularities that I know of, no devices causing trouble, and everything else is working without trouble.

I tried your startup.cfg. It didn’t work, but the size of the black screen that appears did change, so it definitely had an effect.

I appreciate this, by the way :salute:

Well, as you can see in my signature are my system specs. I run the game in 1920x1080 but I don't know about your resolution. Maybe you should

adapt it to your native screen resolution. And btw. in the NCP (Nvidia control panel) you should set it to default again - how knows maybe here are

some weird constellations.

My next step would be to uninstall (again) and make sure you manually delete all of the folders IL-2 creates in their entirety.  Given that this only affects IL-2 but not other similar games, and that it was working with your current Nvidea set up,  it looks like you either have a corrupt download (which is where Steam integrity check comes in handy, no idea what the installer can do) or there is something lurking in an IL-2 file that was not uninstalled properly and is causing a conflict.

Apart from that I am stumped.

I'd get a vaccuum and remove all the dust and sock residues in your computer case.

I cured a couple of systems that way.
