AI visibility after 4.006 patch

I did some testing for the AI's ability to see you through forrests (or rather trees that is after this test).

It seems like the AI is not able to see you if you are within a 50m deep forrest. In other words you don't have to be 50 meters behind tree cover.

I had to be almost out of the trees right in front of the AI tank before it would spot me and start to shoot.

Secondly, I tested the AI's ability to see you when there are hills. I can only confirm that it is true that the AI will continuously aim at you while driving in cover and out of sight behind hills yet it will not fire at you. I hope the latter can be used as input to the former that the AI actually doesn't know where you are but only where it last saw you and (stretching it here) estimate your direction.

1. Behind all the trees. Not visible

2. Still not visible to the AI

3. Finally visible to the AI where it starts shooting. I am almost out of the tree line

4. AI is unable to see me even though I'm in clear sight of it.

5. I can easily see the AI tank ahead of me.

Just adding screenshots showing the AI always knows exactly where you are - even behind hills.

In some occasions the AI cant see me behind hills and is not changing its path.

Maybe some hills are visible and some are not.

When the career came out I was once shot through the hill. I think its somewhere in the bug forum.

Maybe when Ferdinand is completed they have time to look at AI. Back to Steel Beasts for a while till it happens :)

AI is still stupid ?

AI tank is 200 meters from the player’s tank, the visibility of the target is excellent, but the AI tank does not shoot.

Thanks for information on these tests.  I found that if you have AI on the other side of the test that the AI will return fire before the non waypoint AI.  So in your test...I am taking that you are in the tank and not AI right?  Because in mine, the opposing AI with waypoints and "low" setting promptly fired and destroyed the enemy position.  So it would seem that some of the correction has been in "dumbing" down the alertness and aggressive spirit of the stationary AI.  A good test now would be two moving AI tanks on either side of the woods...moving to the tapered point to see the balance then.

I found the same with the 50 meters as the woods tapered in my experiment as well, but my AI tank with waypoints promptly destroyed the stationary tank.

That will probably never be improved.

There is no chance to have every tree as sight block. Maybe for small part of trees it will be possible at least for the TC map.

Like destructible buildings we have on TC map, there could be small block of tress with every tree (let say 15-20) modeled as a sight block (rough shape of the tree) and it will be added by the mission designer at some parts of the map.

The AI could be programed to move around the block of trees to see you, but it will be like comedy, both of you moving around in circles, chasing each other :)

I don't think it is impossible at all.

I did some testing in Steel Beasts and it has much larger forrest coverage and still the AI for all the tanks are able to pin point enemies between the leaves of the trees really well.

Simplified... It is simple to know the direction between two tanks. If you render the other tank and overlay this with the objects in that rectangle between the two tanks and render the view port with objects between the two (and this is purely without adding colours, 3d shadows, etc.) you will immediately know if the tank is visible or not and you can decide how many pixels basically consider you to be visible or not. Again this can be a factor of the AI smartness what is required. I don't think it is a complete CPU killer doing a simplified and fast rendering.
