Screen space ambient occlusion

Hi, just a quick question is SSAO, Screen space ambient occlusion necessary in VR.

I don't use it. Though, I've been meaning to test if it gives any depth or contrast to planes or if it only exists in the cockpit.

I was just wondering it gives the allusion of depth on a flat screen but in VR you don't need a allusion as you sitting in a cockpit like the real thing.

It represents the way ambient light interacts with surfaces. It's relevant regardless of your display type.

 

The only reason to leave it off would be for performance reasons. Which is a valid concern for vr users.

It looks nice, it uses a fair bit of GPU grunt, it only affects the cockpit as far as I can tell.

I was only asking because I have had it on always in the past with most of my settings in ultra which looks very pretty in the HP Reverb avg 60fps. Turned SSAO off last night and noticed things in the cockpits I've never seen before, it looked much crisper and the colours stood out much more and the Avg is now 80fps.

It gives me strange glittering artefacts in the distance, otherwise I'd probably use it.

I like 80hz on my Rift S, so I don't use SSAO. That's basically my own calculus.

I am happy that I can use it with the new build. I aim for 60 FPS on my HP Reverb (in 60hz mode).

 

Just use what you enjoy more, higher frames or SSAO look.
