In case you were wondering..and even if you weren't wondering... GOOGLE translator wasn't all that helpful. But LeCuvier from the South of France was.

Got ALL the FW's in IL2. But had to get a clickable cockpit FW in DCS ...so had to be careful where I clicked ?

Thinking about it-ole Kurt Tank couldn't design it to jettison via air stream??

The airflow over the canopy will not always be the same during different situations in which you might have to bail out.

Thus the charge to blow the canopy off to the rear.

Canopy comes off no matter what your attitude or situation.

 

Ole Kurt Tank did in fact give it plenty of thought.

Consider how he made everything so modular to repair-well thought out..I'm sure you are right.

It was an amazingly well designed and highly adaptable aircraft - one that Eric Brown said was as close to perfect upon entering service as an aircraft could be.

 

It could operate from primitive, barely prepared airfields with very little technical support, in snowy arctic cold or sandy desert heat and everything in between. You could take the same basic air frame and it could be a radial engine air superiority fighter, a heavy bomber destroyer, a fighter bomber, a liquid cooled Dora-9 or an extreme altitude Ta-152.

 

It was basically the Swiss army knife of WW2 fighters.

Two possibilities:

 

1) Either just airstream wasn't satisfatory in testing (which was an issue with many airplanes - especially in the 109, where on to of sometimes not being able to jettison the canopy, the canopy was heavy to begin with).

 

2) In order to assure separation ALWAYS, they just didn't bother and installed pyrotechnics. I like that approach.

Hit a lever and BANG all your worries about not getting out are basicly gone. Just unbuckle, kick the stick and you're out.

Interesting points..curious now..gonna look for a walk around to see what this charge looks like and it's size/type of explosive.

Stuck canopy damn near kilt Ben Affleck. Nearly cost him his best girl and his best friend. Would have never happened had Kurt Tank designed that canopy.

They were also working on an ejection seat for the 190 at one time if memory is correct.

Do you have a link to the incident? Hadn't heard about that before and haven't been able to dig it up.

Buchon, the most famous 109 from WW2, even when you have CGI on your side. I hope Ben is ok, though.
