dburne Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 https://www.oculus.com/blog/celebrating-the-one-year-anniversary-of-oculus-quest-and-rift-s/ Hand tracking in Quest moves from Experimental to General release in next update. Opens up to third party developers on May 28th. Should be interesting seeing games supporting this feature. Over 100 million dollars has been spent on Quest content since it's release a year ago. 1
Alonzo Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 Heh. That should be renamed "celebrating the 1 year anniversary of Quest and sort-of mentioning the Rift S as well although we don't make much money from it and it's not really our favorite." Is it only a year? I feel like my Rift S has been due for replacement for at least the last six months or so. Narrow FOV is really starting to get to me. ? 1

LOL, fov does not really bother me, probably because I have never tried one with larger though. Figure what I don't know can't hurt me. Edited May 19, 2020 by dburne

I fly with the Rift S most of the time because its way more comfortable, way less clunky to set up, and I like the look of the image better. I find my pimax is a little washed out. However! the Resolution boost, FOV boost and refresh rate boost are all quite incredible the first time you try it. It becomes possible to land the plane in VR by just watching the end of the runway and keeping track of horizon with your peripheral vision. The Pimax5k is a great headset, but all the factors that make it good, also mean you need a really powerful machine to push those extra pixels and frames. So in general i still recommend the Rift S to people. Hopefuly some day soon we will see a true, no compromises headset. The Valve Index is close (but they don't sell it at all in Australia) perhaps the newly teased HP "no compromises" headset will turn out to be the one we're waiting for.

If the Index had inside/out tracking similar to the Rift S I would have already grabbed one. Maybe the next iteration will offer it.

Maybe the next iteration will offer it. Can I ask why? It's a bit of a faff to set up, but people rave about the accuracy of the Steam tracking lasers. With this update I'm right back in "what new HMD should I buy?". Even with an 8-week wait and more weight than my current Rift S, the Valve Index seems to be at the top of the list. I wish I knew more about Reverb G2, especially the FOV. I want to like Pimax as an option but there are just endless threads where people are having issues, and in the latest patch of IL2 you need to enable parallel projection for zoom to work. I'm starting to think the combination of 'mainstream' and 'reasonable FOV and resolution' make the Index a good choice.

Mainly for the simplicity and the tracking on my Rift S is quite good enough for me. But yeah, If I did not mind both the expense and the setup of a current Valve Index I would be all over it. Going to be patient for a bit as I am still quite happy with the Rift S, especially in the performance department.
