il2crashesnfails Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Engine fires at low altitude freak me out, you are too low to bailout. Feels like at any second you will explode. Especially with the 262. Just waiting for the fuel tanks to explode 1
Reggie_Mental Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Jet fuel has a very high flashpoint, so unless the tanks get as hot as the engine, they won't explode. But the heat of the fire will cause structural failure due to the low ductile temperature of aircraft aluminium. IIRC Engine fires were common in BMW004 & JJ04 engines. I think one solution was a dive to blow it out by overcooling! 1

Possibly. But the 262 could fly on one engine. Asymmetric thrust was acceptable below a certain speed. They would have to get below 10,000ft to relight them. 1
