Currently flying Bodenplate.  401st Sq  P-38.   Would love to bust some Locomotives.   Whats the best way to find them and are they extremely rare?

Find RR tracks and follow them. Bound to come across a train or two.

Are train attacks implemented in BoBP career mode? I haven't seen one yet.

For now you can just setup a QMB and attack a train. there's usually at least one if you have them turned on in the mission selection window.

Have not had any train attack missions yet either.    One would think there would be some.

If  you activated Trains in a QMB Mission you just watch for the steam smoke trail and there you will find your Train. I like to attack Trains with 20mm cannons.

There are railway junction attacks, yes.

Yep,  I just flew one, finally.   Man the P-38 is a beast at ground attack.

I do love train attacks. The .50s on Mustangs and Thunderbolts are quite effective on the locomotives. Part of me wishes they were a little tougher to stop though. It seems they stop almost as soon as you put a few holes in them.

From my reading (I did some research and posted about it last year):

The fairly standard defensive tactic was to bring the train to a halt as soon as it fell under air attack... this would allow non-essential crew and passengers to bail out and it would also mean the gunners weren't having to fire from a moving platform.

The locomotive drivers would also open cocks and do everything they could to make smoke in order to obscure the locomotive itself (which led to quite a few false claims of locomotives destroyed).

That said, trains should have a lot more momentum... so they should start stopping as soon as they spot the attacking aircraft but take longer to come to a full stop.

There was a phase of the Allied offensive after the attack on Aachen and before the Battle of the Bulge where train interdiction on “The Red Line” was the main focus. You will have quite a few train attack missions in the P-38 “Lightning Strikes” scripted campaign when it is released.

It will be very soon.

I would very much like to do some more train hunting missions outside of the rail junction attacks. Both are are fun.
