Trooper117 Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 I've been playing through 'Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Remastered' recently and I got to mission 4 'No Russian', and it instantly hit me that it created quite a sh@tstorm when it was released back in 2009. Now I'm not squeamish, but when I played it years ago it left me feeling very uneasy as the mission progressed, so much so that I didn't fire a shot until I was engaged by the Russian authorities. Playing through it again but with better graphics, I still found I could not fire a shot until I was engaged... I don't know about you people, although I know it's just a game, I still felt 'this is wrong' when I did it again... I've never felt that about any other violent game I have played before. Here is a look at the mission anyway... (not me playing) 1 3
Jaws2002 Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 (edited) I know exactly what you mean. I stopped playing it, when i got to that mission and took it again few weeks later, when i was in different mood. Mostly shooting at the cops. I remember the WTF moment when the "teammates" started mowing everyone down. I did shoot Makarov in the head a few times. If you don't count that mission, that was, in my opinion, the best COD game. Jaws2002 Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 (edited) That's one of the most messed up gaming moments. It makes you sick to the stomach. Recently i got this new Doom Eternal and I had to put it down after a few missions. While the job of the character is to kill demons, playing a game, surrounded by all that demonic symbology is just too much. The game runs butter smooth and looks good, but the whole atmosphere is just too evil for my taste. I had the same feelings watching Vikings. Good series, action packed, but all those glorified blood sacrifices put me off from watching the rest of it. Edited May 11, 2020 by Jaws2002 1
Eisenfaustus Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 I believe that was exactly the idea behind the mission - and I fired at walls, chairs and ceiling in that mission because I wanted to stay undercover but couldn't shoot civilians. Played the mission again telling me I was pointing pixels at pixels but realised it felt wrong nevertheless and stopped shooting... Which didn't seem to anger my "comrades" - what felt unimmersive... All in all - I enjoyed modern warfare I way more

Trooper117 Posted May 12, 2020 Author Posted May 12, 2020 Yep, I played MW1 Remastered in 2018... it is the best one in my opinion with some classic missions... mind you, the latest version that came out CoDMW 2019 has a great campaign too, My favourite mission is 'Clean House', very immersive and tense the first time you play it!

That said, the mission always felt tacked on in an attempt to garner attention and generate controversy more than anything else. It didn't move the story along nor did your action or inaction have an effect either way. 15 hours ago, raaaid said: its all carefully crafted to destroy human nature https://forums.ubisoft.com/showthread.php/231355-pretending-shooting-vs-psicopathy History would beg to differ. It isn't crafted to destroy human nature it's a depiction of human nature, at our very core. Just take a look at what we've been doing to each other since the earliest recorded histories. Whether it is modern media via film, television, and video games or Epipaleolithic cave paintings depicting mass murder it matters not. It's who and what we are.

Makerov knew about you, the player, and you were killed and left at the site of the massacre for the Russian authorities to find with the consequent reaction of starting WW3. Soon you will be fighting Russian forces who have invaded North America in some pretty heavy actions. Fighting in the suburbs and streets, big battles around the diner and car park with Russian paras were great firefights...
6./ZG26_Custard Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 I mentioned this before but my absolute favourite mission in the COD series is "All Ghillied Up" and I personally think that the first Modern Warfare has yet to be beaten in the series. 3
Trooper117 Posted May 14, 2020 Author Posted May 14, 2020 That mission was so hard to beat!... it took me god knows how many attempts! 1

Fighting in the suburbs and streets, big battles around the diner and car park with Russian paras were great firefights... No, it didn't effect the story. It was a scripted set-piece. You might wanna re-read my initial post for your edification. Quote That said, the mission always felt tacked on in an attempt to garner attention and generate controversy more than anything else. It didn't move the story along nor did your action or inaction have an effect either way. Whether you participated in the mass murder of civilians or not had zero impact upon the story, the result was the same. They could've implemented the entire concept via a cutscene or substantive AAR prior to a mission, but instead chose to design an entire level solely as a marketing tool.
Trooper117 Posted May 15, 2020 Author Posted May 15, 2020 As I'm not privvy to the private conversations that went into the reasoning behind it's inclusion, you are more in the know than me it seems Det, I'll bow to your superior knowledge... However, it did get included, and the following further missions set in America were highly enjoyable.

It really sickened me to watch. No matter context. No wonder world is where it is 1
