HeavyCavalrySgt Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 I have been thinking that these facilities are awfully nice. Revetments for the aircraft, mostly paved runways, control towers, miscellaneous buildings and bunkers. I wonder if it was always that way though. I had read and seen video of Russian aircraft operating off of frozen lakes or rivers, and I know the ability to operate off unimproved airfields has remained with Soviet fighters well into the jet age. It seems like that would be important in the back and forth of moving battle lines, but perhaps less so during a long drawn out siege. Even there though, if the enemy is able to gain even temporary, local air superiority all those nice facilities probably make a tempting target for bombers. So, did the combatants during Battle of Stalingrad use dispersed, unimproved airfields or will we always be operating from the lap of luxury?
Finkeren Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 In the final Stalingrad map there will be dozens and dozens of airfields of different sizes. I have a gut feeling, that what we're seeing currently are some of the best.
LLv34_Flanker Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 S! Rall and others mentioned the "airfields" were most of the time a patch of a field with holes dug around it to get some shrapnel protection for tents they lived in. And the infamous "Donnerbalke" for a loo
