nihalmurth Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 (edited) Hi, does anyone have any advice or tips on how to taxi and takeoff safely with tail dragger aircraft without rudder pedals? I've been trying my best, but getting the rudder to respond quickly enough with the keyboard controls is very difficult. Is there a setting or trick to being able to taxi using a keyboard with some of the more difficult tail dragger planes? I can only really get the IL-2 and P-51 (using lots of toe brakes) to the runway. Planes like the P-47, Tempest, Spit Vb are basically impossible to taxi with the keyboard for me right now. Thanks Edited May 10, 2020 by nihalmurth
95spitfire Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 With aircraft equipped with, try to lock your tail-wheel once aligned before applying power. Use the yaw rudder trim if available Always apply power gently (meaning, don't reach 100% until you haveenough air speed to have air control: let's say 40-50 kts, aircraft depending
Lusekofte Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 P 47 got tailwheel lock. I have rudder pedals with left brake not working. I use a stick button as brake and rudder to show witch side to brake. Ground handling is a difficult endeavor in both this game and DCS. All though it is not easy in reality I understand it to be not realistic and something we have to live with. I understand quite well you having problems using the keyboard , but it is a sweetspot using brakes and rudder we all need to learn. Me and 5 others currently fly 109 e7 in coop. You would have laughted looking at us in the first 5 missions. It could take an hour to get us all to the runway
SharpeXB Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 (edited) First it’s worth noting how the brakes actually work on the different aircraft. You may have figured that out already. I actually use HOTAS buttons for the right and left toe brakes and a stick button for the single brake level like on the Russian planes. (I would rather have to zoom view assigned to my left toe brake which works marvelously well. It’s a more important command than brakes IMO) Anyways, when taxing with brake buttons just tap them very quick, it can help to watch the pedals in the plane to get an idea what they’re doing. With enough practice it’s very doable. But for takeoff... wow I don’t know. It would take a lot of practice to do this with buttons. An axis control for the rudder is also essential for flying. Check the Difficulty settings for the “Rudder Assist” option if you don’t have one. Edited May 10, 2020 by SharpeXB
