Monksilver Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 The part of the map with Moscow on it is shaded and I can't get over the city. The site says the pack includes the 'Moscow map' so I expected to be able to fly over Moscow, after all it is hardly a Moscow map if you can't get to Moscow and the Stalingrad map allows you to fly over Stalingrad. The main reason I bought Battle of Moscow is to fly over Moscow, what I am missing to be able to get to it? 1
=621=Samikatz Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 Moscow itself wasn't really bombed directly during the battle, so the map was focused to the west. The actual Moscow city area is low quite low detail, I'm afraid. If you're deathly curious: 1
BlitzPig_EL Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 You are missing nothing sir. This was a design decision by the developers to save vast amounts of work making a VERY large city detailed enough to look good up close, and to save computer cycles for the player. If a very detailed Moscow could be flown over, a majority of people's computers would simply throw up their "hands" and the game would grind to a near halt. 1
Art-J Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 As mentioned above, "The Moscow map" means the area on which the Moscow campaign took place (which is way outside of the city) - not the city itself, which, unlike Stalingrad, never saw combat. Thus, the city has been modelled in a very simplified way, only to look acceptable from the long distance, because there never was a plan to allow players to fly over it in the first place. Samikatz provides the link to the mod, which disables the "virtual barrier" and lets you fly over the Moscow, but be aware that, as I mentioned, the city 3D model and textures are rudimentary placeholders only.
ShamrockOneFive Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 While Stalingrad was fought over directly with both armies laying siege to the city, the battle for Moscow was fought outside of the city with its fate determined by that battle. The other reason why you can't fly over it is the detailed modeling required and that the team didn't have the city technology that they do now although I suspect a city like Moscow would take more than anything we have on Bodenplatte.
Monksilver Posted May 8, 2020 Author Posted May 8, 2020 Thanks for the replies and understood. I tried the EffeDB mod link but can only get a page unavailable message - does anyone know if it can be found elsewhere?

The supplied link works for me. https://mega.nz/#!WyZURQ7J!ft38ErmxoXSHcVqli-fJ9kNe8b3M4agDhbunSzZe_7s
Monksilver Posted May 8, 2020 Author Posted May 8, 2020 That's the link I've tried but I just can't get to it. Looks like an issue my end as I can't access any of the mega.nz pages - looks like time to review my fire wall

I compared the populations of the various large cities on the Bodenplatte map to Moscow at one point. Koln I think is the biggest city on the map, or close to it, with a population of 730000 around the time of the war. Moscow, at the time of the war, was 4.1 million, almost six times the size just by population. Its not clear that the game would be able to handle rendering that size or detail of buildings over such a large area. 1
