hello, as il-2 BOS works fine with proton 5.0 on my linux 20.04 ubuntu. i've been trying to get the STEditor to also work. somehow.

i have a)tried wine, both playonlinux, and lutris, (apparently ether its a .NET issue, or subscreens known issue it give a funn error surface not created beforehanging.).

b) tried using VM virtualbox.. (once installing all the packages that other exe require (as the STEditor does not throw errors like say DServer, RConClient etc(which i used to guess at what dependencies are need) i also, loaded steam and did a dry run of il-2 (it ovlzy does not run, but, it installs all the needed Microsoft drectex, .Netframeworks etc..

anyways the STEditor loads to about half way before hanging forever, no error just hang. i'm unsure if a log is made somewhere..

1)i'm wondering what exactly does the STEditor use, and need to run.. what dlls is it useing, what external libs is it calling etc.

2) if anyone has managed to get it to work outside of native windows. (in a VM, via some emulator, or is their a binary that is not exe?).

it just seem ridicules to setup a duel boot to ONLY use do mission editor when the game itself works fine in linux. (mind you i suspect their MAY be away to force proton to get the editor to work. so if anyone knows what settings to pump through proton-tricks etc to get it to work. plz let me know i see very very little, info online. and ovlzy a small game community smaller Linux community and even smaller % wanting of those Linux gammers wanting to delve deep into mission design. so, i know im a hyper minority here. but i would like any option that is not duel boot, (i'm even looking at PCI passthrough,  in QEMU/KVM but that looks like it be a 15-30 hour project at best.  i will next attempt VMware as it does support drectx10.1... before i delve into PCIpassthrough. however. i;m sure im just missing some library, in the VM or in protontricks etc. but not knowing what the editor uses. that is different from the game itself.. and little to no documentation around the editor exists on a software level. anwyhoz if theirzz anyy peepz who are into software design or devz who can give me a hint at want i;m looking at.be sweet. since 20.04 ubuntu almost all my games, and software work native so, i'm not looking at duel booting anymore. seemly only ting left is their editor and ableton  lol. orrr compile and release a version thatworks elsewhere? hehe. anwyhzo cheerrzzohz

Oh... It's been one year. Linux is alive, Linux will help ?

I also had a similar problem and found a solution.

Run the editor with WINEPREFIX=game (Steam folders).

WINEPREFIX=/Games/Steam_Games/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/307960/pfx wine STEditor.exe ?
