plepew Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 Sometime in the future, I would love to see a Great Battles release for the early China-Burma Theater (Dec 1941--May 1942). This was the theater of war for Claire Chennault's Flying Tigers - while they were still the AVG. It is a theater that hasn't received any serious treatment in WW2 air combat sims yet and it is long overdue! This Great Battle release would cover the Japanese Army invasion of Burma from Thailand in an effort to cut off supplies to China over the Burma road through the port of Rangoon. The scenery would be beautiful and different from European scenery seen so far with lush, tropical, coastal plains around the river deltas of the Irriwaddy, Sittaing, and Salween (now Thanlyin) rivers in the south, to more mountainous terrain in the north around Toungoo, Mandalay, and Lashio (maybe requiring two different maps). In Dec 1941, after the Pearl Harbor attacks, the Japanese began bombing missions to hit the port of Rangoon and Mingaladon airfield. In January 1942, the Japanese invasion of Burma (now Myanmar) began in the south from Thailand. The British, Chinese, Indian, and American (AVG) forces tried to hold them off, but by March the city of Rangoon was in Japanese hands. In the next phase of the battle, allied forces tried to fall back and hold the Japanese advance with no success at Toungoo, then Mandalay. By May, the British, American, and Indian forces had retreated into India and the Chinese had retreated into China. the Japanese advance stopped on the Salween and Chindwin rivers with the beginning of the Monsoon season. There are a variety of aircraft involved in the air campaign that we haven't seen yet in Great Battles, and a few already available. On the Allied side, these fighters would include the Curtiss P40IIB (and by April 1942, P40Es), the Brewster F2A Buffalo, and Hawker Hurricanes. The Chinese were also flying Lockheed Hudson A-29 bombers courtesy of the lend-lease act. B-25's from the Doolittle raid in April '42 never arrived. The Japanese had quite a variety of aircraft in that theater including Nakajima KI-27 Nates, KI-43 Oscars, KI-44 Tojos, and even the twin engined KI-45 Nick. Their bombers included the Mitsubishi KI-21 Sally. They did not however have the famous A6M Zero fighter as has been well documented. Anyway, just something I have been waiting to see for a long time, hopefully there are lots of other Flying Tigers fans out there who would love to see the same. 3
Pikestance Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 This would be a remarkable achievement. I wonder if the the efforts to introduce Chinese language to the gain open the eyes of the developers to the potential market in China. (Japanese as well- may get people playing in the Asian/Pacific time zones).
SYN_Vander Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 Just having an early Flying Tigers "Battle" would already make me very happy: P40B, Hurricane, Brewster Buffallo, Ki-27, Ki43, KI-21 and a Burma/Rangoon map.
Chief_Mouser Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 (edited) I'd go for it - or New Guinea. But if the problems sourcing Japanese aircraft specs are persisting then we'll not see it. Edited May 8, 2020 by 216th_Cat
41Sqn_Skipper Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 Over Burma there were a lot of air operations even in the following years 44-45 with lots of reuse of existing/confirmed planes in RAF service: Thunderbolts, Douglas C47, Hurricane (already mentioned), Spitfire V and VIII (IX is close enough as a replacement). It actually would be a "pacific" scenario that works within the technical limitations.
BlitzPig_EL Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 Good luck getting aircraft wearing the Nationalist Chinese White Sun markings past game censors in mainland (Red) China. That will never happen, and hence shoots down any chance at that large game market.

Chinese gov't is only consistent in being inconsistent and sometimes contradictory of anything they censor.

The Nationalist Army flag is okay for some reason, though (I guess because it only acknowledges the Nationalist Army as an armed force and not as a sovereign nation).
