I know there's a post that talks about it, but it's from 2018. So, is there any mod that improves the AI out there at the moment?

No. AI is hard coded.

Is there a way to modify the career mission between generation and before loading of the file? I'd like to apply some automatic changes (e.g. set some skins or change waypoint priority or was some additional triggers).

In the gtp files (the lua folder iirc) there are AI files for each aircraft.  Mostly simple parameters like gun accuracy by skill level and angle of engagement.  The same stuff that RoF has.  You could probably adjust some values there, but as Semor indicated the majority of the AI behaviour is hard coded.

Changing the values in the luascripts folder will make the AI behave differently, like engaging in maneuvers more often. Its a nightmare to test though.

Thanks for the info. My main problem with AI is their terrible aiming/gunnery. They miss each other all the time. Sounds like this is something that can be improved by modding the files. 

Actually I think AI is intentionally coded to aim bad, but maybe at bit overdone in the course of the recent AI improvements.

Calculating lead should be pretty easy for them, as they know speed, distance, angle off and so on (as can be seen by the accuracy of defensive/turret gunners).

On Ace they can do well, but I think there's a bug where their aim gets worse at high altitudes. Gotta test it out though.

They cant hit a thing at any altitude, no matter the skill level! Just turn and they are of no danger. Even flying straight they often miss big planes like bombers. Its garbage. I would wish for better aim but with a lot of spray so that not all projectiles hit the same damn spot like we had it a few years ago. This would make them somewhat usable as wingman. Im tired of missions where i down 90% of the enemy planes while my wingmates miss at every opportunity even on Ace level. That alone holds me back from playing more. Every update is the same for me, playing a few days after release and then get bored pretty fast.

I went six months blind and rejoined the fight with the il2 gb ai. I often find myself dead. Seldom flak ,uncommon other ai fighters ,often bomber gunners

 

I found a ai gunnery mod ready for six one.

But can we get an ai to behave like humans or like humans with x flying experience?

 

Not having any flight with gunnery mod.

 

I have some experience on 2ww flying stuff and I often read bombers are cheap prey but they actually but up quite a fight in il2 gb ai. 

But there were thousands of them and they became really dangerous in combat boxes everyone spraying bullets into the sky.

But often it happens frustrating often in quick mission builder flights. They seem to have sniper accuracy.,..as example there was a flight I was flying me262 and my target was a bomber which just shot from range I was incoming at me. So this bomber and I shot at the same time after 2-3 secs he got my plane burning.and it happens often other case was like bf109 coming from not good attack angle for the il2 gunner in his shot field and he got me after instantly I couldn't record any flights

 

I play often qmb and career in which you can't decide which skill the ai has.

Please don't argue "noob 1337 ace time"

There are some untouchable players out there for me. With reaction times like being zero tolerated on pervitin.lol.

I think I die to often for my exp against stock ai. WW2 business is hard but I like to fly in a non arcade sim world where dying is part of it. But bum bum bum dead dead dead after a break of some months seems not fair to me.
