MadDog31 Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Hey all, its me again lol. I remember when i first played IL2 Battle of Stalingrad couple of years back, there was kind of level up thing going on. I remember you had to complete missions to gather XP and unlock new things. I can't find it anymore. Is it deleted or is the Career some kind of replacement?
Jade_Monkey Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 The XP leveling was removed more than two years ago. Everything is unlocked. The Career is new since then but there is no unlocking, you just enjoy it.
Beazil Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 That was a design decision made while I assume the designers were trying to incorporate a means of "unlocking" skins and modifications as a gaming device of sorts. That choice was changed. It was kind of cool though in that you started with the Lagg 3 for training. That was a fun experience. But it was a bit on the "gamey" side and since it limited access to planes and loadouts until you "earned them". What is a budding stuka pilot to do? So it was dropped in favour or a more player driven model. Campaign mode continues to be an area of evolution for the sim. Pat Wilson's Campaign generator is a tool available for personal online and offline campaign design. It's got several tutorials on youtube. You might remember it from before. It's come a long way.
MadDog31 Posted May 2, 2020 Author Posted May 2, 2020 Thanks for the replies. It makes sense, as it is a very good simulator. Somehow it was fun to unlock things and level up and develope your pilot.
Velxra Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 I do much prefer the everything is unlocked approach. It feels more real like pulling your plane into a hanger to do some light modifications. Instead of having to do X amount of missions to be permitted an alteration. Though for the curious, the devs removed the unlock feature in mid/late 2017 if memory recalls correctly. I believe it was a community request. 1

Most people thought it was a silly feature, myself included. The idea that I had to grind out singleplayer missions like some MMO before I could fly the Fw 190? Yeah thanks, I'll go play some other sim. Glad they changed it. 1 3
Eisenfaustus Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 I have to admit that I was among the few who enjoyed the old system as well. Don't get me wrong - career mode is a huge improvement and I fully understand why so many hated the unlock stuff. It was just that for me it set the right motivation to learn diffrent planes and try diffrent loadouts. I know I still can do that and now without any restrictions, but the old system got you the illsuion of having something achieved... So yes - campaign system changed for the better - but I personally liked the old system too.

The old system gave motivation in a different way to push forward and to learn. Also i may be too used to games which more likely have some kind of level system ?

I didn't mind the experience of leveling up but the implementation that locked away features and skins was too much of a game mechanic for the flight sim community. You could also only rank up in single player. It all went over like a lead balloon and it was one of the first changes of course that was deemed to be a good thing. I wouldn't have minded an achievement system in the back end that could challenge you to do certain things. Say dive bomb from 3,000 meters or above. Level bomb. Shoot down 100 fighters. I wouldn't advocate developer resources to be spent on this at this point and IMHO I think it's the wrong crowd for this kind of feature but I wouldn't have minded those as it wouldn't affect those who didn't want it. 1
