bivalov Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Any idea why this 1.3 ata limitation was put in place at first for the G-2 when the F-4 didn't have it? 1.42 ata for DB 601 E (1350 ps instead 1310 for DB 605) was cleared somewhere during early'42, but i can't remember more concrete information... if you mean, why f-4 may use 1350 ps, just because it's limited "start- und notleistung" and personally i heard about problems f.e. like failure of spark plugs, if plane without duplication of spark plugs and without small air intakes in cowling, like for gustav... generally speaking, f-4 in game it's plane of ~mid'42, because lack of some parts of his design (airintakes, f.e.) and lack of some modifications (as writes Kurfurst and like i seen in "uebersichtsliste der aenderungs-anweisungen bf 109"), but i not sure, of course, just guessing... In my opinion and I might be wrong but here goes, I don't think the Russians caught up to the Germans single engine fight wise until the La-5N and I think that's just the way it was. I think I remember a Gunther Rall story about him trying to catch one and he couldn't saying "He was damn fast".. I could be wrong about the La-5N so please say something if you know better. The 109 in Russia reminds me of the Zero in the Pacific and the hard time the Americans had with it. ok, look - if you can understood my english... - serial la-5 type 37 s4 (without details, it's almost s8) showed during tests ~535 kph at sl and WEP, almost like prototype with ~545, ie it's very good la-5... limit for WEP was 5 min (10 if really need, officially, 13 min it's real record)... but i not sure in positions of side flaps+blinds/flaps for oil cooler, no description of this important detail, tests of early series are very rare, so, looks like all flaps were closed for better speed, like during test of prototype... new fw 190 a-3 with gills and 1.32 (30 min)/1.42 (ONLY 3 min., if i not mistaken, because here not so much info about), it's ~520/540... in total, planes very similar in performance, la-5 can be a bit better in turns/duration of forsazh, although, and here could be some "feature"... fw can be a bit better in climb... etc... BUT there need to remember all these things which we know as "reality", it's different quality/problems/defects etc, it's handling (early series has several problems, but s8 can be better, hard to say when planes got new parts of design, without docs and even with), it's experience of pilot, it's probability of meeting different pilots/planes, it's type of mentality of each side and each human etc etc etc, i think you and many people can said here more, about life... next, good la-5f type 39 ("bubble top") it's ~548-557 kph... new normaljaeger fw 190 a-3/4/5/6 with flaps it's ~560-565 kph... and here almost same story, i think, but this la-5 faster or similar even with g-2 early, with 1.42 (if it's 550 kph)... yak-1b, which fought in BOS, it's ~525-531 kph, bf 109 f-4 late it's ~540 (just guess), but at limited 1.42, bf 109 g-2 it's ~530... very similar speeds, in total, but even SOME la-5 of early series will be better/similar with 109s, late series it's ~550... but, remember here settings of side flaps+blinds/flaps for oil cooler etc... so, i mean, life is not so simple, i think, but in total only la-5fn was really faster than all typical, serial german fighters... but, mainly, with WEP (during almost all'43 it's will be 3-4 min, instead 5 min, because old type of sparking plugs) and at sl...
