Auto mixture

Trying to expand the planes I'm familiar with to include the US with the automatic mixtures. Basic question, if I want auto-rich, do I have to have the throttle directly over the auto rich line, or is is just anywhere between that line and the Rich line? Are there graduations in auto-rich or is it just an "on/off" mechanism--i.e. you're either on auto rich or not on auto rich?

You don't have to be right on just about 85% IIRC. there is a range something like 76-90%.
