FoV requirements for defensive scissors without angle mods?

What says on the tin. Anyone have a good idea just how much FOV one needs to be able to track targets in defensive scissors without needing the view mod buttons?

I'm picking around in a number of different VR flight sims now, and mostly want to figure out how to do this without modding every one of them or using a spinny chair, and figured this is the forum most focused on effective spotting and tracking.

Even with Pimax5k+, I found that FoV is not enough. Maybe it's because I use progressive penses, but every helmet has a sweet spot, so you hardly be able to have the same FoV than in real life So I think that you need something more, but other disagree. You will find a lot of argumentation pro ans cons here : https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=262558

Im using lenovo explorer and never felt a need for additional angle mod. Since we are not strapped in to the chair I just check six by shifting my whole upper torso rather than just my head.

I have no problem doing it in the Index (110 degrees).

Latter half of the video I force my self into a defensive position due too some silly mistakes. I lean to one side as I look behind this helps, usually the side opposite I'm trying to see behind. Keep in mind the video has less FOV than I see in headset.

Same here, no mods for me I much prefer my 1:1 tracking in my Rift S. I would never have it any other way.

I like it as realistic as possible.

Same here, on the Pimax 5K+ I can do that frequently. I can also effortlessly engage in barrel rolls and keep track of the enemy. Being able to increase contrast freely is also an immense bonus.

It's been an overlong time since I've lost a target in a dogfight.

I guess I just need to work on my flexibility and figure out if I can mod the head strap so it stays on better (HP Reverb). I do notice it tends to ride up in back when aim doing high angle tracking.

The Index may or may not work for me. I have glasses and, apparently a 71mm ipd, so I'd probably end up with the lenses pretty far back, with a low fov.

Honestly not sure how the Pimax hardware would do with me. I gather it supports a high IPD, but that the lenses also interfere with glasses, so I might need to get prescription inserts, if/when I go that route. I'm sort of waiting until there's GPU hardware sufficient to drive the 8KX at full resolution before going there. I personally feel we need another 30-40% or so over the current too 3D cards before I'd be able to get solid frame rates with the Reverb with max render distances enabled. And that would imply the 8KX would need even more GPU power to hit those same frame rates.

So, stick with what I'm issuing now and get bendier, I guess.

Don't really need to get that much bendier - driftaholic explained it very well - lean left and look back over right shoulder while twisting right. Just make sure you are close enough to the stick so you can move like that freely.

I don't wear glasses, if I did and contacts were available for my prescription I would do that for VR. I like looking straight up to secure the headset, make sure the ring on the strap is around your occipital protuberance, snug, and then take up any slack in the top strap.
