montag Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 (edited) I want to build a new computer soon (Within the next few months). I don't mind spending a decent chunk of change for a good computer. Does this game seem to run better on Intel vs AMD CPUs and also Nvidia vs AMD gpus? Also I want it to run a good high resolution VR headset at the max frames for sure and possible. I'm not trying to run a 4k monitor. I'll probably get a 1440p 144hz monitor, though that's mostly for other games. Also any recommendations on headsets? Edited April 16, 2020 by TheKillerSloth
LLv34_Flanker Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 S! Check my Signature. That thing runs anything I throw at it. I tested VR with it, no problems.
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 That CPU cannot handle IL-2 in VR without meeting the bottleneck regularly. Don't rely on people saying "runs fine", it is better to know we have collected hard data. See here: For almost all legacy games that have been ported to VR - which includes IL-2 - you usually have difficult or somewhat insufficient thread management for the CPU. This is especially true for both DCS and IL-2. They require a high single-core clock: IL-2 needs to clear 4800MHz while pumping AVX instructions to remove it as a bottleneck. This is only met by overclocked Intel CPUs. That's the reason why generally Intel CPUs are recommended on these forums and others. There is a vocal minority of people that recommend AMD CPUs or try to justify selecting these, but the community / chiliwili69 has collected an extensive dataset here. When checking out the spreadsheet of the results, make sure to only look at actual datapoints gathered in VR. Results collected by Monitor-using clients are not representative for VR performance, as they're not facing the CPU bottleneck.

Buy NVIDIA 3080TI the day is available, at the moment if you are not in a hurry just wait. 1
dburne Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 Chip - Intel or AMD, pick your poison. I personally feel Intel has the advantage for what we do. GPU - Nvidia all the way. Best you can afford. Headset - very happy with my Rift S, but may be in minority here. Reverb and Index are popular options for simming, I have only used Rift and Rift S.
montag Posted April 17, 2020 Author Posted April 17, 2020 Thanks guys this is the kind of insight I am looking for. I am most concerned about Il2 performance over other factors. Other games and tasks I plan on doing will run fine with whatever I get.
Bernard_IV Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 If IL2 is what you want to build for you want an overclockable Intel chip. You don't need a lot of cores or hyperthreading for IL2 so you can choose one of the lower options if you'd like. You will want an AIO water cooler for your overclocked processor and an overclocking board. Get Thermal Grizzly paste. Fast ram will benefit you as well. The best stuff comes from Samsung's B die. G.Skill 3200 CL14 is a good value for this, there are some faster options that may or may not work like the higher end Corsair stuff. You want higher frequency, low latency ram. You want a big graphics card. A used 1080 TI is a good value. I find I could use a little bit more than my 1080 TI. A new 2080 or 2080 TI is better. Bigger cards are coming at the end of the year. The top choices for headsets are HP Reverb, Valve Index, and Oculus Rift S. They have their pros and cons. Have fun!
