Is it possible to do this?

I have a feeling that I already know the answer, but you never know.

I would like to make more room on my external hard drive. I fly the Bodenplatte airplanes almost exclusively, in here. And only use the Bodenplatte and Kuban maps. Is there a way to uninstall only the Moscow and Stalingrad modules while keeping the other two?

I believe that everyone who has even one module of the game has *every* module on their drive and every collector plane. Not sure if that also includes Flying Circus & Tank thingy.     The problem is that you might fly a 109K on a Kuban map and meet a PE-2 from BoS so must have them all.

Ewwww, do you have il2 installed on an external hard drive?

Oh yeah....ssd. My sims run great on it.

Even if you own only one module, all of the other planes in other modules are available to you as AI. So that wouldn't really matter. And all of the maps are available if playing on line, even if you don't own them. I was on servers that used the Kuban map, even before I owned kuban.

Slowed down by your data cable, USB port and another cable to your MOBO. An SSD plugged directly into your MOBO would significantly increase your performance. Just sayin'....

Hard drive/SSD speed makes little difference to IL-2 GB game performance, once a mission is running. An internal SSD would speed up load times, but otherwise you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference, as the drive is only minimally accessed during gameplay.

Well, it's an older Asuz gaming laptop. So this is as good as it's gonna get with it. But, of course, my next one will have a built in SSD. When I saw how much faster DCS  ran on this ssd, I transferred all of my flight sims to it. Start quicker, run faster...I'm a believer. Nothing but solid state drive next time around.

I notivced a big difference with DCS, Andy. Not with IL-2, though, huh?

IL-2 GB loads the complete map before a mission starts. DCS doesn't. There may be other differences in disk access too, but I think that is the major one.

If you could delete those map packs you would not see the Heinkel flying on Bodenplatte.
The reason we got all things even collector planes. Is for actually be able to fight them even if you do not have them. In order to see a skin you need to have it installed toyour game

You could, with difficulty, move each individual folder that stores e.g. map data to a different drive and link them all back using virtual links (mklink) in windows command line.

I do not recommend this . It would take a long time to do, would be prone to weird and wonderful issues and may just destroy your performance, load times etc.

You are misunderstanding me.  If you removed all modules apart from Kuban & Bodenplatte then went into a Kuban map server online that had PE2s then you could not see them (more likely the game would crash).  The planes you don't own are only visible because you have those modules on your PC even if you don't own them.   I think it is also quite likely that if someone was to make an online server that only has Kuban planes but flies over a Stalingrad map then you would not be able to fly there without the hidden Stalingrad module being on your PC.

Ah, I see. Well, I wound up moving IL-2 off of the SSD and on to my C drive. Like Jason said (and he should know) performance did not change, although there is a slightly longer load time. Nothing really annoying, though.
