AKA_Clutter Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 All, I have a new 2070S and am trying to overclock the GPU. I am using EVGA's Precision X1 (1.04 I think). I do fly VR via Rift S and an i7 8700k (stock) and 64 GB ram. I have a setting of Mem +1000 and Boost + 130. This is stable in all other games (DCS, Half Life Alyx, Elite Dangerous). When I start IL-2, the game loads, I get to the main screen. However, when ever I select a game to join (Quick Mission, Multiplayer, etc.) the game immediately shuts down and kicks me back top the desktop. Does anyone know what might be wrong?
jollyjack Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 (edited) And NOT without overclocking the GPU? I have a 2080ti, never tried it. I had these CTD crashes on game start with 4.005b. After reinstalling the lot from scratch they were gone BTW. I have some Vsync problems, only in IL2, occasional horizontal line moving down the screen. Vsync is on it says. Either in card settings or Game controlled the same. Maybe if both are on, must check. Edited April 16, 2020 by jollyjack

Have you tried it without the overclock applied? If you get the same result then it is not the overclock causing the problem. If it works as it should then the overclock is causing the problem. dburne Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 Yeah I would test that overclock, it is a little aggressive.
Vortice Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 (edited) I have an EVGA 2070 Super XC Gaming fitted with an EK Vector waterblock in a custom loop (2x 360 radiators) powering a HP Reverb Headset and I was able to to overclock it to +115 boost / +95 memory (stable) using the Precision software, but it didn't give me any significant framerate gains in IL2, or improve the game experience much as far as I could tell. It just used up more electricity and made my loop and the room hotter, so I decided to set the card back to its default settings and now I'm getting 70 - 75 fps average in busy situations, which is fine for my needs. Just because you can doesn't necessarily mean that you have to..... Edited April 16, 2020 by Vortice
Jaws2002 Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 (edited) Many of the graphics cards out there are already a bit overclocked from the factory. Basically everything that comes with a custom cooler has a bit of overclock done at the factory, so your overclock head room will vary from card to card. What exact card is it? AKA_Clutter Posted April 18, 2020 Author Posted April 18, 2020 Sorry I was less than clear. The game runs fine when the 2070S is at no overclock. I did try a mild overclock and it crashed as above. My guess is the IL-2 isn't that friendly to OCing
AndyJWest Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 (edited) There's not really such a thing as a game (or any other software) that 'isn't friendly to OCing'. If it fails when OC'd and doesn't when run at stock speeds, you are pushing the hardware beyond its limits. No software fix can correct for that. Edited April 18, 2020 by AndyJWest
Tarapatraptar Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 Il-2 is fine with overclocking the GPU. I have a 2070S overclocked through Afterburner and works without issues. Must be your settings.
Nadelbaum Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 Got an Asus 2070 and overclocking with the Rog Gpu Tweak (or whatever the name is). Absolutely no issues with IL-2 so far. Always running it in OC.
Otto_bann Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 I use Afterburner too. I follow settings like here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6firZckwlQ8 The 2 images below for the same settings on 2 differents Afterburner skins : https://i.goopics.net/K40KY.jpg
Bernard_IV Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 Some games will take a higher overclock, some won't. You have to test each game. In VR you will have large gains from overclocking your CPU FYI.

I'm not so sure about that, and it may be something with my setup. I tried running IL-2 with Precision 1 running with default settings. Same thing. Get past the loading screen, but the game immediately shuts down when I try and enter a mission. I also tried with a milder OC 750 meme and 100 Boost. No go. I may give MSI Afterburner a try and see how that goes. Is there a real reason to OC? Probably not here, but also fly DCS which is less friendly to VR.
Tarapatraptar Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 My GPU stats was showing 98% usage in DCS and Il-2. Now, after oveclocking, shows 97%
