AdlerUK Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 I can't find this simple information anywhere, but what is the HUD distance measurement unit? If the enemy plane is 1.00 away from me, is it 1 kilometre or 1 mile? I'm trying to master setting up the gyro sight in a Spitfire which is set in yards and knowing what distance is shown on the HUD would be helpful. Thanks in advance ☺️
RedKestrel Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 It depends on the unit type you have set in the interface options I believe.

And by default it's set to kilometers. Convergence and enemy wingspan are how you set the sight up. Convergence is set to meters. So if you have your convergence set to 300meters, then your distance will be 328yards (roughly). Normal wingspan of a 109 is 32 feet, and a 190 is 34 feet... So I normally set my wingspan distance at 33 feet. Unless, I see a 110 of course! Then it's much wider. Edited April 16, 2020 by Sketch

I tried changing the unit type in the interface but I did not notice it having an effect on the distance shown but I'll try it again. What convergence are you guys setting up for your guns? I know that it's up to personal preference but I'm keen to find out whether most people prefer to set it near or far.
Sketch Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 I have mine set at 300m. However, a good setting for wing mounted guns (in my opinion) is between 250 and 350 meters. 1

I have seen some people set their convergence as low as 75 metres (which is far, far too low in my opinion) with others setting it as high as 450 metres (too far for a typical engagement IMO). Most people are probably in the 200-350 m range. For myself, I find most of the time I am opening fire between 250 and 300 metres, and most engagements are between 100m and 400m. In an ideal world I would probably use 250 m for air-to-air and 400 m for air-to-ground. As a compromise I set convergence at 300 m, which is not too far for an air-to-air scenario and far enough that when strafing I can still take shots somewhat accurately and pull up in time. I find myself often engaging air and ground targets in a single sortie so a compromise is necessary. 2
