Can you use different squadrons in the same mission?

Is there a way to have MP Co-Op pilots take part in the mission but in different squadrons and aircraft?  For example I just want to make a mission where some players are in a ground attack type whilst other players are in a fighter from a different squadron.  However when I try and add players to the mission it only allows me to add pilots from 1 of the squadrons and not both (and only 1 aircraft type obviously as well).  I'm sure I'm just doing something stupid somewhere.

Yes, you can do this. You can even have some players on the opposing team, with their own stats, rewards, and limited plane set too.

Any hints on how?  Just been looking at it again.   When first setting up a mission I've selected all the players I want in the mission, half in Tempests and the other half in Spits.  When I go pilot selection screen only the Tempest squadron shows up and not the Spit one.  I assume this is because I am the host and in the Tempest squadron, when I transfer to the Spitfire Squadron then all I see is Spits and I can't add anyone in Tempests?

Maybe you are using the wrong Coop version. Did you watch the videos, Pat created?

Thanks for the video explaining things.  Yes I had already watched all of Pat's videos, but I was using the Co-Op mode not the Competitive mode.  I assumed that as I didn't want any players on the opposing team, only AI, that co-op was the correct mode to use.  But that seems to have been the problem.  I suppose I could just make 1 player on the opposing side with some additional AI, and if no one takes the slot then the AI will assume it and carry on with their mission.

That should work fine (you may not even need to create the opposing player).  Before Pat just added this feature for SP, I played Competitive as a SP just to have the additional squadrons and it worked fine without any additional players.

You do not need to create an opposing player at all.
