Hi all its been since 2010 and I'm looking to get back into the sim. I played back in the days of HYPER LOBBY if any remember that?I lost touch with my old squade mates as well as my friends in a group called TUSA (TEAMUSA) if any of you are still around please reach out!

I'm wondering a few things to get me up to speed.

1. Is there a popular server or lobby like hyper lobby still and where are the server portals?

2. Do I need to buy every version of il2 ?

3. What version are most people playing these days?

4. Can I host my own multiplayer games these days and make my own maps ? I hosted some great rooms made skins and maps, I really miss it.

5. I like to fly what they used to call "full real" ie in cock pit no icons using compass to navigate. do folks still do that?

Wings of Liberty = Early war and mostly Eastern front engagements and planes (BoM and BoS planesets mostly)

Combat Box = Late war and mostly Western front engagements and planes (BoBp planesets)

Total Air War = A persistent campaign, where what you do in the air effects the front lines. Much more hardcore than any other server, as you only have 3 lives, limited planes, and the AAA at the objectives are extremely accurate. I wouldn't play on this server unless I had a friend (or 3) to cover me. (All of the planessets)

Finnish Virtual Server = Early to mid war persistent campaign. Again, what you do in the air, effects the front lines. This server's difficulty is on par with Combat Box, you don't have to register yourself (like in TAW), and there's a more relaxed limit plane amount. (BoM and BoS planesets mostly)

On the weekends, all of these servers are typically full. Also during EU times, these servers seem to be full. D

Which one to get? That depends on you. If you're okay with early war Eastern front planes, then I recommend Battle of Stalingrad (BoS). It has the most planes that are unique (not just varients) and is often on sale for 50% or less. If you want to fly late war Western front planes, then get Battle of Bodenplatte (BoBP)

You can, but the mission editor is way more robust that 1946. Because of this, there's a steep learning curve to the mission editor. Additionally, a new server won't have the same traction as an already established server. Players go where players are.

All the servers I listed use 'full real'. However, Wings of Liberty does have the magical GPS indicator on the map. Makes it much easier for land navigation and what not.

1. there is no hyperlobby, you go in game Multiplayer and select coop or dogfight and all servers are listed.

There is good number of popular servers, yesterday in peak time around 20h-22h gmt there was 600+ players online, most full servers are ww2, one was ww1 and one mix of tanks and airplanes.

2. no, but if you buy on steam you have to have Battle of Stalingrad as its considered mian game, others are DLC.

3. if you look you have discount cods to use so if im new player i would buy Battle of Stalingrad (75% on sale) to cover most early-mid east front war online, and Battle of Bodenplate (50% on sale) for late war.

4. Yes all is posible like in il-2 1946 but from game not hyperlobby

5. most servers are some combination of it, although you have technical messages about your engine overheating and so on or tips about when airplane is iabout to stall that cant be turned off by server.

For cheep prices they have now its almost as its free so you cant make mistake if you get one of standard versions and try it out.
