Friend with a laptop - has he got a hope?

I have a friend who recently moved from Australia to the US.  He is interested in getting into IL-2 but he's a laptop user and his most recent purchase sounds very lightweight for the Il-2 series.  I'm not sure what he onboard graphics are, but the specs he did give me are:

Aspire A515-51G

Laptop-60O0RHTT

Intel Core i5-8250U CPU @ 1.6GHz

8GB RAM

I only fly myself by the grace of god, so I don't have the background to advise on what might work for him.  Can anyone here advise on whether he would be able to run BoX tolerably well and if an external graphics card might help?  If it is a no-go it would also be worthwhile to know if he could run RoF or even 1946 as a sort of gateway drug to get him into it.  Any assistance will be very gratefully received!  :)

Those are pretty low specs for 2020 but I'm sure that he could run 1946.  Peripherals will always be a problem with a laptop, though.  If he were my pal I'd urge him to take the plunge and put $1000 into parts for a home-built gaming PC.

The min CPU clock speed specs for seem to be 2.4 GHz for RoF, and 2.6 GHz for BoX, so if that spec is accurate, he's out of luck. I'd double check the specs though, as Acer's website seems to have a higher spec for the Aspire 5 A515-51G (though it may be a different model):

That model is 2.5 GHz, and seems to have a GeForce® MX150 GPU, which might work at low graphics settings.

Let him go ahead and try ROF. As I recall it is free so nothing to lose.:gamer:

I am also certain IL 1946 will run fine.

The first time I ran BoX was on a dual-core E6700 (2.6Ghz? )with a GTX 950.

It was actually pretty good as long as there were only two planes in the air.

Nice!  Thanks for the advice.

I've got him to download RoF and I'll see if I can walk him through the installation.  He's tried 1946 before but his earlier laptop was not built for games so it didn't work at all.

I'll see if I can get him hooked somehow though.  Maybe I'll give him CFS2 if all else fails.  Hey it worked for me back in the day :)
