Hard time playing Call Of Duty WWII with my son

These days of confinement at home I have been able to explore other games beyond IL-2 VR.

My 12-yr son plays with the XBox-OneX and this week I have proposed him to get CallOfDuty WWII (high discounts of Activision games right now) sine you can play in local mode for 2 people in the same team in a divided screen. we have a 4K 55"" TV and the game looks so great. Basically I wanted to play and enjoy that with my son these days.

The game downloaded (about 80GB!) and my son quickly configured everything using the typical XBox controller he normally uses. I am at 50's (I consider myself young enough) but I must confess that I have never used a controller like the Xbox in monitor (used it in early VR with the Rift, but never not with monitor).

My son launched the first battle (he, me and 3 bots, against 5 bots). "We" won the battle,  but despite my son was trying to keep safe,  I was killed about 13 times and did just one kill. My son did really well. I was a bit frustrated about how bad I can be in front of my son. It was a bit of embarrasing.  What an example of a dad   ?

This damm Xbox controller is OK for the left stick (move) and other buttons (fire, grenades, pointing, etc). But the the tricky thing is the right stick to move where you look at. In VR (and even trackIR) you do that naturally, but it is really difficult to move the view and aim with that crazy little thumbstick!!!

I don´t know if there is other way to control the aiming (Can TrackIR work with XboxX??, or even mouse, or other easier controllers, ). O maybe I should train my few free neurons to learn  how to aim with the thumb.  Any advice to train?

The game is really worth. Normandy and many other missions were great (Just looking how my son plays)

Alternatively, I can buy a new PC and teach my son to play with me at IL-2 VR.... ?

If I can learn to drive competitive times in Assetto Corsa Competizione with the X-Box controller, then you can learn a stupid FPS. ?

Get thumb stick extensions (I epoxied them on) that way you have much finer control.

but dont this controllers have an horrible central death zone?

You can tune the dead zone in the controller setup (at least in ACC)

I had to put in 20 hours to get up to reasonable speed, and even then I'm more on the edge than with a wheel, but I just don't have the space for a wheel anymore.

Totally understand you guys. The controller is terrible for shooters. I’ve been using a mouse my entire life, and it’s so much better. You cannot even aim properly with those little buttons on a controller. It’s insane, and I think I will never learn to use it.
