Radeon or NVidia

Im looking at buying a new video card.  Il2 1946 did better with nvidia.  Which card seems to run Il2 BoBP better

At the lower and mid range I think there are good choices from both. If your looking at the high end it’s Nvidia.

I'm running Nvidia's RTX 2080Ti-OC with game settings maxed out and getting average of FPS between 120ish and 150ish....sometimes  190+ if a lot isn't going on in the game at the time.

 

But then again, for a $1,300 card I wouldn't expect any less. The 1080Ti is a lot cheaper and still a good choice too.

For low to mid-range card I'd look for the memory - the larger, the better. IL2-GB isn't that demanding at the moment, but other flight-sim you bought enjoy a larger vRAM. The GPU (at the moment) isn't that decisive, but it might change for Il2-GB somewhat when new features like "Deferred Shading" are built in.

It is also important to know that the RTX 2060 was updated with the 2070 entry level chip and called 2060 Super (yes, the 2060 Super is in fact a 2070). And the RTX 2070 was updated with the 2080 entry level chip and called 2070 Super. So unless the standard 2000 series is way cheaper, it is better to buy the updated Super series, since it comes with the chip above (big difference). Just the 2080 Super that does not have the Ti chip, so it is just a boosted 2080 card.

The way Nvidia classifies the different cards is a little confusing when you are looking to buy. Its never really clear what all the different designations really mean, at least in the current gen. It seems like there are a bunch of different cards that produce functionally the same performance, but they are named differently and priced differently, and what "super" means varies from card to card.

I just bought a 1660 Super. It has basically the same performance as the 1660 TI according to online tests. The difference between the vanilla 1660 and the 1660 Super is basically better onboard memory. It has better memory than the TI, but the TI has more processing power in theory. In practice, the reviews I've read show that the faster memory of the 1660 Super produces almost the exact same performance in games as the extra processing of the 1660 TI, at about 30-40 dollars cheaper. 

So in the 1600 series the Super cards have better/faster memory, but in the 2000 series the Super cards are actually just up-chipped to the next level card?  So you have standard, Super, and TI but those designations mean something  different depending on the card. Not the most consumer-friendly naming convention. Maybe they just assume their customer base will be doing their research very thoroughly.

As to which card to buy, I haven't gotten much chance to really stretch the 1660 Super's legs yet, but my first impressions are quite good. I am coming from a 1060 3GB, which was really hamstrung by the low memory and very rarely topped out in terms of processing power before the memory became a problem. My testing so far has been heavily loaded quick missions. I did a test with 8 fighters vs. 8 He-111 bombers over Brussels. With most settings on Ultra, mirrors and shadows on Medium and clouds on Extreme with fairly heavy low cloud cover, fighting at low altitude, I seldom dropped below 60 FPS on 1080p, with only very occasional stutters when flying at building height over the city. The usage on the card never went beyond 80% at peak, so it still has headroom. I will be testing it online as soon as I can to see how things are there. But I suspect that the card is more than enough for my display, and the 2060 or higher would be overkill for my needs.

So if you are playing at 1080p and 60fps, which is a pretty common gaming setup from what I understand, the 1660 super can probably play on High or Ultra settings with no problems, and as far as GPUs go its pretty affordable.

Yes, but just the 2060 and 2070 Super. These cards are binned, so the best chips go to the best cards, let's say a Gaming X. The bottom line ones go to the Ventus and such for example. The Super series is getting the bottom line of the 2070 and 2080 chips.

 

But even though you are getting a bottom line 2070 chip on the 2060 Super for example, you are still playing with a 2070 chip (8GB instead of 6GB) and paying a 2060 price tag. And these chips can overclock as well, just not as the top binned chips. Or if you get a dog one, you won't be able to raise the clock that much, but it is still a chip above. 

 

That's why the Super series is so attractive.

 

The 2080 Super does not have these perks, since it carries the same 2080 chip but with improvements, I'm not sure what they did, memory, that sort of thing.

I bought a 2060 Super specially for IL2 and it's great. And very happy I spent the extra few bucks for the Super model with 8GB RAM instead of 6GB with the standard card.

vega 56 or vega 64 or the 1080 . 1070 is also good . Must have 8gb vram .
