Complex Engine Management : Some Guidance Please

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've done a 'search' on this subject and couldn't find anything, so my apologies if this has been raised elsewhere on the forum (I also didn't know what sub-forum to raise this on).

With the 21-day lockdown that we're currently in (down here in South Africa), I've decided to try and get a handle on "complex engine management".

I've done some research on the matter and, from what I can make out, one needs to deal with the following items:

- fuel mixture controls

- propeller pitch controls

- supercharger controls

- engine boost

- oil radiators (and temperature)

- water/coolant radiators (and temperature)

Is that all?

Many thanks in advance.

Yeah you seem to have got it

Some tips I use

I dont have the best stick so I reuse keys

As in my oil and water rads are on my hat switch

I will also control inlet and outlet cowl flaps on my hat - planes with water rads wont have cowls so it works.

Some of the buttons dont really need a joystick button. But it depends how many you have and this is just IMO

For like the P51 since I let the rads be automatically controlled (you have to turn it off like real life for manual) I use my hat for a gunsight. The game has no problem with this.

It also works with my trims - domt forget trims are different for German fighters than other planes

Also for the P47 only theres a turbo control you can link the turbo and rpm to throttle though.

The German planes let you go manual for pitch control I know, but don't most pilots set them at automatic unless taking off or landing? I don't fly the German planes much (or at all outside the 190).

...

See Requiem's videos on complex engine management. He also has a couple of videos on handling multi-engine aircraft in his Flight Principles play list.

FYI, you can access much more IL-2 help under the IL-2 Resources post.
