1CGS LukeFF Posted April 27, 2014 1CGS Posted April 27, 2014 From one of Gordon & Khazanov's books on Soviet WWII aircraft: Is it 'Bf' or 'Me' for the Messerschmitt designs? This work has used official documentation and Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM - Reich Air Ministry) nomenclature has been adhered to. The RLM transition from 'Bf' to 'Me' occurs between the unsuccessful Bf 162 Jaguar (whose number was subsequently allocated to the He 162 Volksjäger) and the Me 163 Komet; all Messerschmitt types below the RLM number 162 being prefixed 'Bf' and all those from 163 and upwards being prefixed 'Me'. 1
Avatar13 Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Thanks Luke! I've often wondered about this many times.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 (edited) Well, the end user composed propaganda songs about the little Me 109 http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=198617 Its like saying you incorrect to call the F-16 the Viper. It's a commonly accepted name for the airframe. Oh and add Jugs to the list to The official designation of the F-16 is and always has been the Fighting Falcon. I don't want to argue over colloquialisms. As for propogandists, I'd hardly use them as a source. According to them Germany was winning the war in the east outright. Until 6th Army stumbled at Stalingrad and shattered that little lie. Done arguing. I never meant to get this deep into it in the first place. It was mostly tongue in cheek, as stated earlier. pixelshader Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 In my mind it is just '109'. Every time I see that number somewhere I feel memories..
