No numbers and emblems in Career mode?

Why no generic numbers or squadron emblems on the planes? Older il2 titles did it, why is this not a thing now ☹️ immersion geek inside me is very sad

Not talking about custom skins here.

Wholeheartedly agree on this one! Would love to see both random squadron numbers and historical marking implemented, especially since unit locations are already implemented. Would be nice to fly over an airfield and meet the actual enemy squadron based on their markings.

A system of mat markings like the old Il-2 enjoyed was never planned for when this series was first developed, so implementing it now is said to be awkward and time consuming.  I agree though, that simply having each career aircraft in the most generic camouflage and basic national markings is certainly a shortcoming compared to what we’ve been used to in previous games.  Perhaps if there was a way to set an individual skin to each pilot and have the game remember it for the life of that character it might go some way to alleviating the situation?

Jason said they are planning on official skin packs (like RoF) so hopefully that means we will see more skins variety in Career Mode (like RoF)

I know this does fall into the realm of the aforementioned custom skins, but through a bit of over-dedication I've effectively created a sort of squadron numbering system for my SP career by just making number templates for the Bf-109.
As the commander of my unit I simply assign each pilot their own number and then put the skin onto their aircraft pre-mission.

It does admittedly take a really long time to make the skins, and it would be great to just see an in game system fully implemented, but I do like the creativity it allows me.
As someone who grew up covering the walls of his room with crude airplane drawings its rather cathartic lol.

Plus, seeing all of the handmade skins flying in formation with you just adds an extra layer of immersion to the career mode overall- especially when a particular pilot survives long enough for his skin to evolve over time, steadily gaining more kill tabs and paint adjustments with the seasons.

It took a decent amount of time to learn, and my first several skins were pretty awful, but by just using GIMP I like to think I've come rather far.
For reference, here's a shot of the 5th Staffel returning to base over Stalingrad in late 1942:

I downloaded and used skins like that, really nice job there.

However, as you said.:
1) You must be the commander

2) ..apply it to every plane every single time

3) You would need to have every squadron in multiple seasons (camo) and the list without preview is awkward to use as it is.

4) It just shows how strong the wish for such feature is

I am sure it was always planed for IL2 sturmovik series, all have it. Cliffs of Dover has it. I think it has to do with the new (or better to say old) rise of flight engine. The coding must be real messed up that such plain and basic function is difficult to implement or just inconvenient for the devs. What about tanks? Never planned and now we have them. It makes me even more sad.
