ciderworm Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 So, when this virus threat is dealt with my cunning plan is to get 2 friends over to introduce them to IL-2 GB. They are in the Mil Aviation business with one a retired Fleet Air Arm pilot and both are into civilian A/C flight sims. So which A/C would you choose as an introduction to IL-2 GB? To my surprise, rather than going with a Brits favourite (Spitfire, P-51) I'm leaning towards the Yak-7 - I love that thing! For me: Fairly docile but great manoeuvrability, stability (seems a contradiction there), guns, visibility and ground handling. Hoping the new Yak-9's are more of the same. 1

Probably every Brit who's gone into aviation since WW2 grew up dreaming of flying a Spitfire. Or, just ask them what they'd like to fly?
=FEW=fernando11 Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 A 1941 il2, no upgrade cannons, maybe Rockets and bombs On a nice SP mission or campaing. Might not be the Uber plane most like, but a good old fashion ground atack maybe at sunrise or sunset can be quite the introduction to this amazing game. 1

Eisenfaustus Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 To me easy and pleasant to fly and the best plane to start the series would be the 109 G2. But if there is a special interest in the RAF the Spit Mk 9 would be my choice over mk 5 and tempest - although both are great of course
ShamrockOneFive Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 Start them with what they know. Lots of people are not good at connecting with an aircraft that they haven't heard of before or have limited knowledge about. The Spitfire is probably a good place to start. 1
ciderworm Posted March 21, 2020 Author Posted March 21, 2020 Thanks Guys, Shamrock, Stan's actually flown a real Spitfire!!! Whilst I was having problems with the ground looping I asked his (real world) advice. Short story: didn't work, I had to go to Requiems gaming advice of applying full brakes once the A/C settled until the stop which seams to work for me. Stan said the A/C should just be allowed to roll out without any significant brake use. It would be fun to see him landing the Spitfire. DD_Crash. No VR, just TrackIR.
Lusekofte Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 Well I would say P 38 if they got yoke. Or A 20. Both very good to fly
cardboard_killer Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 (edited) For me the draw was actually planes I had not virtually flown, which were the Russian planes. I mean, most Americans wouldn't know an Il-2 if it bit them, so when I saw the original game I was hooked. For ease of flight, though, I'd go P-38 with automatic everything and low torque for super easy taxiing. Edited March 21, 2020 by cardboard_killer
[TDH]Meankitty731 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 VR. VR changes flightsims as a whole. Being immersive it really gives you what you need to fly really. I have changed peoples minds about flying just by takling them on easy sightseeing flights, without ever step foot in a real airplane. 1

Oh, put them in Heinkel if you own VR, that damn cockpit made me to buy VR after i tried it on my friends VR, ofcourse after they try something more agile like Dora, A3, Spit, p51 and mc.202. Mc.202 suprised me with it's feel of flight! 1 1

I-16 Yak 1 s69 Spitfire MkIXe Tempest V Fw190D9 Me109K4 The very best though... Me262. Try it in the anti-shipping role. Slamming SC500s with a 1s delay into the side of a freighter at 750kph is such fun! (especially when you have to dodge a bit of flak) Edited March 24, 2020 by Reggie_Mental

I just started flying the 202 and it's a dream, too Robust in a way similar to the Yak 7! Any 109 will also be easy - point, shoot, kill stuff. 1

The Yak-7b is a great little fighter, other than being a bit twitchy on the rudder. With everything fully manual it is also a great way to showcase the systems modeling in Il-2. If they are into civilian aircraft sims they may enjoy a two engine craft. The A-20b is a joy to fly but requires a bit of work to manage properly, so I can see it appealing to civilian sim enthusiasts who like to have systems to engage with.
